Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

OK I joined.. :-) Marilyn91344 here.. I guess it's time for me to go back to physical therapy, see my doctor.. but, I would hope that others heed our warning about the posibility of having these kinds of reaction..tell your friends. I can only hope the medical field finds away to prevent all the problems we are having after getting a shot.. I am going to tell my doctor about this thread..

I posted twice anonymously, Oct. 28Th, 2011.. My name is Marilyn. Guess I'll have to join later. I wanted to add that I don't have shoulder problems, though it's painful to lift my arm above my shoulder, both arms, the pain all seems to be located in my deltoid, my PT could actually feel a knot in my left arm and now I can feel that same knot, that hurts a lot, in my right arm. With my right arm, it's been a month since I got my flu shot. I did have xrays of the left arm about a year ago and they didn't find anything wrong. Then like I said in my previous post, doctor sent me to PT..

To encourage everybody, I had a similar problem with a flu shot. Within 1/2 hour of the shot I was in extreme pain, didn't go to the Dr. because I don't have insurance. Over the next month the pain was pretty bad and my shoulder began to freeze up (called frozen shoulder). The BEST thing you can do for frozen shoulder it USE IT!! Even if it hurts even if you have to have somebody move it for you to get into places you can't. It's now been 2 years since that shot and I have finally regained full use of my arm. I will NEVER get another shot in my arm. There is no reason they can't use some other muscle mass such as the hip or thigh. It was difficult, and a long road but there was a happy ending. Just remember MOVE THE ARM!! It's the only thing that got me back to where I am.

It's October 28, 2011.. I have the same symptoms in both my arms. Last year I had my flu shot in my left arm and complained, several times, got PT and it got a little better, only hurts when I lift it above my shoulder now.
:-( Unfortunately, I had to stop PT because of cancer surgery so I don't know if continuing the PT would have cured my left arm completely. Anyway, until I read this thread I wasn't sure the pain in my right arm was from the shot..why my right arm is so painful.. Now at least I can go back to my doctor and have some ammunition.. since I am not the only one..and this is the second time it's happened to me, once in each arm!

Hi Susan ..I have not filed a claim yet. I wanted to have all of my paperwork together first...and now that I have all but one report, I will be filing a claim by the end of the month. I wish that there were more success stories about this problem, but sadly..it appears to be much more common that we know that folks are still hurting. :-(
I make injectable drugs in a "cleanroom" in my lab (as part of my work)..so I know the routine that goes into keeping a product sterile from start to finish. I just have to wonder about some of these vaccines. :-\ Thank you for asking..

Sad to say that 2 years later (September 24, 2009) I still suffer the effects of my LAST flu shot. I am mostly recovered but the nerve damage appears to be permanant. As I mentioned a couple of years ago, I am not the only one to suffer this injury..a male lab compounding technician met the same fate. It would be nice to be able to lay the blame on the way the shot was administered..but that would not be true. It was the vaccine. I have had everything from physical therapy to steriod injections. I benefited most from the physical therapy. The important thing...is to seek medical attention immediately. Waiting can be your worst mistake. I know that I wish I had sought help sooner, but I waited several weeks. BIG mistake.

I had my flu shot (first ever) nearly 3 weeks ago. The shot was administered just a couple inches below my rotator cup. When the injection was being pushed into the site, I had a sharp/numbing pain in my shoulder. I am still feeling this pain today when I use my left arm to lift or move objects. It is also affecting my sleep, as I cannot even pull up the covers with my left arm without awakening in pain! I also struggle to help my kids get dressed....just the action of pulling up their pants is painful. I'm just trying to figure out if there's some sort of damage I should be aware of from this injection and what I can do to stop the pain. I'll be calling my doctor tomorrow.

Hello, like you I had lingering pain after my flu shot because it was given in the wrong spot. My was given very high and most likely got into the joint. I got my shot at the end of August and had extreme pain and weakness until laterly. I had an MRI and it showed "moderate tendonosis with fluid collection in the acromioclavicular joint.

I am a board certified internist and pediatrician, and I had my doctor prescribe decadron, which is a potent steroid, obviously discuss this with your doctor. I was prescribed decadron 8mg x 2 days and 4 mg x 5 days. I wil say that after the first day of taking the decadron i had my first painfree night and woke to know pain.

by about day 4 I could feel the pain returning but the magnitude was not anywhere near what it was. and as of last week, my pain is very minimal and I do not require anymore pain medication for relief. at this point naproxen 550mg works fine .

I opted to use Decadron because I had read someone else's response and her physicain Rx'd a medrol dose pak. Those are much less potent then decadron and she and indicated while she was taking the steroids, her arm felt great but as soon as she finished the prednisone, the pain came right back with the same intensity.

again if there are no contraindications to you trying the Decadron as I was dosed, it can't hurt and it may help. Good luck

Hello fellow sufferers! It has been a little over a year since my fateful flu stick and I can say that my arm is prob 90% well. If I overdo it I can still tell there is something different from the "pre-stick" arm (a little more pain and stiffness, etc.) but that is entirely manageable.

Interesting note, I was responding to a poster on another site having the problem this year. In working up my response, I again went out on the internet. Voila! It seems the issue about possible shoulder injury from bad injection which was discussed at the VICP Medical Analysis Update last summer has now been followed up with a recently published summary and transcript on the VICP site. It is a 48 page PDF publication and at least 20 pages discuss the shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) that most of us seem to be suffering from. The "good stuff" starts around page 16. I was actually reading it with my mouth open so relieved to finally have what we had already pretty much figured out validated by the medical community. Unfortunately there is still no clear pathway to recovery ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED, however, I am relieved that they are now taking the injuries more seriously.

Here is the link:

Happy reading.....
