Dr. Carson Liu recalls which bariatric surgeries are reversible.

Dr. Liu:
The LAP-BAND® procedure is reversible. So, when we take out the implanted band, the patient’s anatomy and everything is returned back to normal. The gastric bypass is technically reversible, but it does require that we reconnect the stomach and unfortunately the stomach has been cut and divided, stapled into two from the first surgery and if we put it back together those muscles, those nerves and the blood supply never go back to normal. So that emptying of that stomach pouch, the remainder of the stomach is never the same.

The other thing that we do know, at least with the gastric bypass, is that there is massive weight regain when we reverse the gastric bypasses. The bands, it’s been about 50 percent where they regain a lot of their weight back and the other 50 percent have been able to keep off most of it. Again, it’s a lot of it has to do with how well has the patient adjusted their behavior of eating and their behavior of exercise.
