Dr. Carson Liu shares how a patient’s life is transformed after bariatric surgery.

Dr. Liu:
What we see is a lot of people who basically come out of their shell and it’s a fascinating transformation of these patients when they come out of this mode of really being shy, withdrawn and feeling that entire society is basically looking down on them because they are overweight.

Being overweight is actually a very common thing in the United States. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight. So when we see these patients come in, they have all kinds of stories. Some people are infertile. They cannot have children. When they lose their weight, you know, they have children so they come and bring in pictures of their children. It’s a very gratifying thing to see these babies.

We see people who lose their diabetes almost immediately after surgery with minimal weight loss. And the fact that they don’t even think about food all the time is an amazing story from all these patients. So in the end, I think there’s a lot of unique stories from patient to patient. People succeed and they get a hold of their diets and they don’t go through this yo-yo dieting anymore. They basically have total control over their weight loss, which is a terrific thing and every person has their own unique story to tell.

I mean I can probably put a book together with a chapter on each patient and go over each one and it’s a fascinating story for each person. It’s very unique and very, very heartfelt stories from each patient.
