Dr. Carson Liu explains why he believes the LAP-BAND® is the safest bariatric surgery performed.
Dr. Liu:
The reason why it’s the safest procedure out there is because we are not really altering the anatomy. We are simply placing a band around the top of the stomach. The food is processed in a similar manner. We are not dividing the stomach. We are not dividing the blood supply. We are not dividing the nerves to the stomach. We are simply placing this band around it and implanting a little port under the skin so I can adjust the band.
And in doing so, it makes it the safest procedure because we are in and out of surgery in about 30 minutes. The patients have very little pain. They are taking liquid Children’s Tylenol for pain after surgery and they are usually back to work in one or two days.
So this makes it by far the safest procedure because we are not altering the anatomy as drastically as a bypass or as a removal of lot of stomach, which can make it dangerous when you are removing part of the stomach or re-routing the stomach. We worry about leaks along the staple line and bleeding.
About Dr. Carson Liu, M.D., F.A.C.S.:
Dr. Liu received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his internship, residencies and research fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. In 1998, Dr. Liu was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical School where he continued to hone his skills in clinical practice, teaching and research. Dr. Liu has conducted extensive research and is widely published in the fields of Bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery; he is nationally recognized in his field and has lectured extensively to professional societies on these subjects. Dr. Liu is board certified in General Surgery and over the course of his career has performed more than 2600 bariatric surgeries.
