Pamela shares how she found the right doctor to address her hormone problem.

Pamela:
I had a lot of luck in finding my doctor because I had been working with Dr. Heward at Kronos, who is a research endocrinologist, and he told me where to go. Now this doctor doesn’t practice anymore, and I am getting calls regularly from women about where to find physicians who are comfortable working with bio-identical hormones specifically or hormones generally.

Most physicians know one thing about hormones. They understand that the Women’s Health Initiative said that hormones were bad and actually increased the risk of heart disease. We now know that those conclusions are wrong because it was a badly designed trial.

But nonetheless, physicians always take the conservative road, and the conservative road is what the latest big study said, which is not the right road for the patient necessarily. I have tried to say to friends who ask me, it is time to step into your role as a warrior in the sense of you’re mistress of your own universe here, and if you walk into a doctor’s office and you pick up, and this is where female instinct and intuition is invaluable, because I used it at every step.

If you pick up that this physician is not comfortable giving you hormones, if she or he is more worried about a lawsuit that could be related to dispensing hormones to you, then you have to step away. You have to keep going to find another doctor.

I mean, it took me years to sort out this stuff. Even when I went to Kronos, I had to sign disclaimers saying that I understood for each of these hormones there were all these side effects, and I signed off on all of those because I understood that there’s a risk with everything you take.

So yes, you have to step into your own power. This is the most important place to do it when it comes to advocating on your own behalf, and that’s why I think information is so valuable because all you can do is take the big picture and then see how it works for you.
