Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

I received my flu shot 09-13-11 in which my pains started that night. I also couldn't raise my arm up, to the side or back & could not sleep. After 4 cortisone shots, physical theropy, MRIs, 3 Ortho doctor opinions I finally had arthroscopic surgery on February 21, 2012 . My MRIs showed small tears in tendons, tendonitis, & bursitis. When my surgeon went in, he decided the tears didn't need repairs (very small) & had to break up my frozen shoulder (which MRI didn't show) and take care of bone spurs & clean out around the deltoid & bursa area. This procedure was the only thing that worked for me. The shots & theropy before procedure did nothing. I needed to do 8 more weeks (3 times per week) of theropy after the procedure. I can finally sleep at night (with exception of a little pain while on left side). I have almost all of my movement back & will continue to do theropy at home to get rest of it (doctor said it could take a year). There is newer set of minutes from a meeting dated March 8, 2012 in which the Dept. of Health & Human Services is tring to add this shoulder injury (SIRVA) to the Vaccine Injury Table. I am going to call HRSA to see if this injury was added & if it was I will be putting in a claim as should you. If they add this injury it will be as follow... A vaccine recipient shall be considered to have suffered SIRVA if all of following apply: No prior history of pain in shoulder prior to vaccine, Painn occurs 48 hours from shot (they may add a day to that), Pain & reduced range of mothion are limited to vaccine shoulder (they may make it that pain started right away & the limited movement days or week later), No other condition such as brachial neuritis or any other neuropathy. They also mention injection may cause deltoid bursitis, tendonitis, rotator cuff tear, frozen shoulder, impingement syndrome, adhesive capsulitis & shoulder bursitis along with the pain & reduced range of motion.

For myself it's been almost a year with no relief yet. Looks as if I'm in the same boat as you although my surgery is coming up next month. Am hoping for good results similar to yours. Thanks for the info on the claims and would like to hear the outcome as of today. Anything from HRSA? Where do you recommend the information and claims be directed?

I vote with Janice R..(Myarmhurtstoo) I know what injured me..the vaccine. My shot was properely administered and the pain followed a few hours later..and by morning the next day, I could not move my arm or shoulder. That was September 23, 2009. NO, I am not recovered..nor does it appear that I ever will be.I have learned to live my life around my injury and to avoid anything that may set it off. It grieves my heart to see these "new" sufferers come here to post. I feel their pain. I can only ask you to read through this entire thread and do what others including myself have done. You will eventually get to the point that you are more like Janice R and myself..you learn to live with it and avoid hurting yourself or aggravating your injury. Good luck to you all and follow the links that she posted. Excellent information.

I just came home from seeing a heart specialist - because the pain is similar to a heart attach - pain down the arm, shoulder, back and chest. I had an ekg, chest xray, and stress test - all came back normal. The surgeon feels the pain is nerve and muscle related - I told him about the flu shot and that I got it almost in my armpit and he didn't poo poo the idea. Actually, he said that area has a lot of nerves. I truly think he thinks it is from the shot, too. I will never have another one, and this is coming from someone who swore by them. Good luck to all - this pain is horrible.

This is my 3rd post here (last post was dec. 13, 2011). After months of pain, I am finally feeling better. I had an MRI on Dec. 16, 2011 at 8:30 am. I received a call from the hospital at about 1:30pm telling me to come to the emergency room immediately because an abnormality was showing in my bone.....talk about feeling panic! After all was said and done....blood work and x-rays, it was revealed that I had bone swelling and a chipped bone in my shoulder. ALL this was due to the flu shot and the fact that the nurse had somehow penetrated my bone with the vaccine. I am working towards having the physicians office cover all my out of pocket expenses. I still have some movements with my shoulder that cause discomfort, but overall, the pain has subsided greatly. My advice to any who have lasting pain after a vaccine, get it checked out!!!

My sister in Texas has had the same problem since Oct 2011. She can't sleep at night because of the pain and the pain is very progressive and is now into her upper shoulder and neck and down to her finger tips. She went to Walgreens to get the shot. She is in incrediable pain. It's been more than 3 months and the pain is getting worse.

I have posted off and on since I found this great place to vent. My flu injection was back in Oct. of 2009. I am still fighting the lack of strength, pain, poor range of motion, etc. I have had 2 cortisone shots and now the Ortho said my only option is surgery. Well, thanks to Katherine's posting, a Dr. that has posted here and has our problem too, I have an appointment with an Atty that is on the list found at the Vaccine Injury Fund at- http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation . I am so tired of dealing with it. So happy to be believed. I'll keep you posted.

Did you check ''brachial plexus neuropathy''? it's caused by flushots and it's listed on evrey single flu serum pamphlet as a known reaction. Also bpn can take many years to resolve. Constant shoulder pain followed by muscle weakness and loss of motion.

My Ortho did not have me see a neurologist. However, the attorney is going to have me see one thru my HMO's specialists division. I gave up saying anything about the vaccine to the Ortho because he is adament that it is not due to the flu vaccine. Hence my frustration....and common one based on the comments all over this forum. I'm just so glad to have found this vaccine injury fund program. You all should be checking it out once you are eligible.

I had the flu shot at the end of Nov. It was given to me at the side of my left arm almost near my armpit. An hour after I got it my arm was very numb - the next day my arm, shoulder, back and chest were in pain. I thought that I was having a heart attach so I went to the hospital. They did an EKG, xrays and blood test. No heart attach. He told me that it might be muscle related so I told him that I thought it was from the flu shot and he shook his head and smiled like I was crazy. I have had this pain every day since. It comes and goes. If I walk fast it is the worst. The pain is a very numb, weakening feeling. I am going to a heart specialist on Jan. 31 to have a stress test which I know I will fail. I am happy to have found this board because I never had this pain before and it started right after the shot. Does anyone have pain in the middle of the chest like I do? Thanks - Janice
