Wellness Coach Deborah Kesten recalls the main cause of female weight gain.

Deborah Kesten:
Number one reason women gain weight is overeating and the number one reason women overeat is generally emotional eating. They are usually eating out of a negative emotion, anxiety and loneliness, depression, stress, which I define as perceived threat, and when you live in a state of mind of perceived threat and anxiety, you are absolutely poised and filled with anxiety.

You’re just are poised for, you’ve heard the term ”fight or flight.” Your body does not know that you’re not going to be attacked by a lion and you’re going to be dinner. Your body doesn’t know that you’re trying to, for example, one level of stress is dieting constantly. Your body doesn’t know that you are trying to get into a size, I used to say 6 but now it’s a 4 or 2, size 4 jeans, and your body thinks it’s starving so, it slows down.

So, the point being, to answer your question, dieting contributes to overeating and weight gain because it slows down your metabolism and you are starving all the time and you are obsessing with all the I call it “food-fretting.” And so it’s just this whole complex of how you are living and thinking and relating to food and eating in your whole life. That’s a part of the whole problem in terms of overeating and the challenge of it.
