Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question. If you have missed your period now for three months, you should go see your physician. Every woman is different and there may not be any reason for concern but you should still seek physicians assistance. I used to skip periods for months and months at a time, although there was nothing wrong with me.

Physicians can place you on birth control to regulate your period. If thats your case of just randomly missed periods. There is always a chance that the pregnancy tests are wrong too although that there is a smaller chance of that being the answer.

Are you doing anything different? Exercising more? Do you find yourself stressed out? There are many things that will cause missed periods and these are to just name a few. Is there anything else you can add so we may be able to better answer your question.

she has also been going through a lot of stress lately, problems with her grandmother, school and an ex-boyfriend that has been emotionally hurting her.

Anon,

It does sound like a difficult situation. That amount of stress can have a real impact on whether your girlfriend's period is late.

From the way you describe it, I would think that she is safe from pregnancy. When used correctly, condoms have a high percentage of success. The fact that you did not ejaculate inside her would give you an even smaller chance of pregnancy.

To become pregnant, some sperm MUST enter the vagina to travel up into the woman's uterus and fallopian tubes. I don't see how this could have happened with the circumstances you describe.

Sometimes, for no real reason, we can have a period that's a week or 10 days late. It may be a change in our lives, due to stress, medication, diet or activity. It certainly sounds as though your girlfriend is dealing with her share of things.

Please tell your girlfriend to relax a bit, and breathe. You two were responsible when you were intimate and I am guessing that she's just late. If she can focus on normal activities and not worry so much, I would guess her period will come in the next week.

In the meantime, does she need help with the stress and family issues? I know you are giving her support, but does she have other friends or family (or a teacher or counselor) who are available to her during this time?

Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting any "pregnancy hormones" once a woman has missed her period, so hopefully that is helpful.

As Diane said, it can be normal for a woman to have a late, even missed, period. If she is still very concerned, does she have a gynecologist she can call to make an appointment? Many GYNs are not concerned with one missed period (with a negative pregnancy test and no other symptoms), and may even tell her to wait for her next period--it's really that common.

Please help, I am about 10 days late for my period. I am on birth control and have been for about 3 years - I recently switched to a different kind about 3 months ago. I have been under a lot of stress the last few weeks from school, work, family and this isn't helping. I took 3 pregnancy tests and all were negative. I took one right after I missed, one a few days later and then a week later. I fooled around without a condom about 2-3 weeks prior to missing with my bf but then he put one on. He didn't ejaculate in me but I'm still worried. I have no symptoms so that and the negative results from 3 tests makes me think that I'm not pregnant. I think the stress I've had for a few weeks prior to missing has something to do with this but I need some advice. Thanks.

You can feel confident in the results from your home pregnancy tests, since you have taken 3 after your missed period. Home pregnancy tests are about 99% effective at detecting any "pregnancy hormones" in your body after a missed period.

Women do have late/missed periods at times, and this can be normal and related to many things: new medication, excess stress, recent illness, etc.

Try to relax and be confident in your tests results, and wait another week to see if your period begins. If not, you can always call your GYN or family doctor to ask if you should make an appointment, but most gynecologists will not be concerned until you have missed more than one period, or have a high chance of being pregnant.

From what you describe, you had genital-to-genital touching without penetration, and he did not ejaculate on/near your vagina, and this would be considered a slight chance of pregnancy...not a high chance...by itself. Coupled with the fact that you have been using birth control pills (a change 3 months ago doesn't matter), then you really can be confident that you are at a very low risk of being pregnant.
