Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

JayJay,

This is very common when you are stressed, if you exercise or sometimes there is no clear reason why we have missed periods. Sometimes they just happen without any medical reasoning. I know this is frustrating but if you have any concern, take a pregnancy test to rule out any possibility of pregnancy.

If there is no pregnancy, go to your physician and they can give you a prescription to force your period to start. Remember, you are under stress and trying to cope with the loss of a loved one. Take your time to heal as your possible depression, stress over possible pregnancy and just trying to maintain may be causing the delay or mild periods. When we, as women, go through tough times, our bodies assimilate.

Keep us updated and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Hi,
I'm 35. I've 3 kids, and the youngest is 4 yrs old. My husband and I have try to conceive since early this year. Now my period is 27 days late. I have take 4 UPT tests and the result is all negative. I've do the ultrasound, and MD said it's empty. MD asked me to wait for 5 more days before I do the UPT again. My question, Is there is any possibility I'm pregnant if the next UPT turn out to be negative. I have been regular for pass 4 years, and my circle is 30 days. My last period is 8 - 13 June 2010.

Hi ladies,

I stumbled across this thread via a Google search and am in a similar situation, now looking for some other people's insights/experiences to hopefully put my mind at ease!

I had sex on June 18. It was protected with a condom (I'm not on the Pill though) and to the best of my knowledge no cum escaped...but I guess you never know! My period was due that day but didn't come until the 20th. My average cycle is 31 days but my periods are frequently a day or two late, so that wasn't a big deal.

My July period was due on the 21st, and now it's the 25th and still no period. I've been having lower back cramps the past few days and was extremely mood swingy/irritable about half a week ago, so i thought my period was going to come soon, but I guess not! And I know lower back pains and irritability/moodiness are also early pregnancy signs, so that has just added to my worry.

I had a severe case of strep throat soon after my June period and was on antibiotics and everything. I am thinking this illness delayed my ovulation, therefore delaying my period. How late does illness usually cause a period to be?

Also I thought I was entirely safe since I got my June period, but then I thought about that maybe my period would have come anyway even if I had conceived on the 18th since my period was so close to coming... if I had gotten pregnant on the 18th would my June period still have come? I'm not quite sure how that works.

Please pray that my period comes, I'm definitely not ready for a baby!! I've never had unprotected sex though so I'm fairly certain it's just late or even missed due to illness, but I guess there's always that possibility... Thanks!

Hi,
No, if you had conceived on June 18th, your period would not have begun on June 20th. Conception actually takes 10-14 days, from ovulation to implantation. When you have your menstrual period, that means that the lining of the uterus is shedding BECAUSE there is not an implanted fertilized egg. Our body's cycle is constantly "gearing up" for a possible pregnancy, by ovulating, then thickening the lining of the uterus (as well as many other things). This is all to prepare for a fertilized egg to implant into the thickened uterine lining, and if this does not happen, the body sheds the uterine lining. This is what we know as our period.

Antibiotics, or the illness itself, may impact your cycle. Your symtpoms are most likely signaling an upcoming period. Please write back in a week if your period still has not started!

I *think* my period has started today. I noticed blood when I wiped after my morning pee, so I got very excited and relieved and put a pad on...but by lunchtime I checked it and there wasn't much blood on it at all, and I still haven't had that globby bit of blood fall out yet (sorry, that sounds gross). So now I'm wondering if I'm spotting due to pregnancy...I just can't catch a break! Whenever I get my period the glob bit usually comes out first thing, but there have been a few occasions where I lightly bleed for a day beforehand, so maybe tomorrow I will know for sure.

Bleeding does not usually indicate a pregnancy; your period will probably begin its normal heavier flow in the next day or two!
