Lorraine provides advice for women who are newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
Lorraine:
I tell them that they are not alone. I will also share my story that they always have someone like myself to come to and talk to. I let them know that HIV is no longer a death sentence, that you can live with this disease. You have to learn how to manage your health better, and I sit there and I tell them, “Look at it as an opportunity that you are going to learn how to make healthier choices.”
And then I use examples like, “If you had a heart attack or if you had cancer, what would you do different?” And think of it as something that can be manageable instead of something that is destroying.
And then I tell them to go to support groups where there can meet other women, other peers, so that they can talk to other individuals who are also walking in their shoes so that they are not alone.
