Dr. Steinman shares ways women can treat signs of aging skin.

Dr. Steinman:
It depends on the degree of aging, what your skin type is, how dark your pigmentation is because that will affect what certain treatments are allowed without an increased risk of side effects. How much down time can a woman have, can she take a week off of work for an advanced procedure that will be highly effective that requires some down time or does she have to work everyday, so we have to use maybe more topical treatments and gentle treatments that were effective, but require multiple treatments. For patients who have the earlier signs of aging, a change in the texture of their skin perhaps some fine lines, some fine wrinkles, pigmentary changes, brown spots, you can often treat those very conservatively with an effective sunscreen and effective rejuvenating cream such as a Retin-A type product or an antioxidant cream or a vitamin C cream and a fading cream and then you can use gentle treatments. We have gentle clinical peels that have no down time. You can do microdermabrasion treatment like soap peels. You can inject the finer lines that are caused by muscle movement with Botox. You can fill in some of the deeper lines if they are present with fillers and there are also some effective lasers that you can use that do not require a lot of down time and can get rid of the brown spots, the redness, the increased blood vessels, the shallow complexion. As patients age more and their skin starts to sag and they lose volume in their face and they get sort of jowling in there cheeks, then you need to be a little more aggressive. We have more aggressive chemical peels for that, there are certain lasers that are appropriate for that, there are some very excellent new filler products that you can inject under the skin that actually lift up the skin and replace the lost volume decreasing the folds raising up the corners of the mouth, getting rid of lines around the lips and below the corners of the mouth and then there some surgical procedures we can do. We can do short scar facelifts, laser resurfacing, slightly more aggressive treatments that may require a little a bit of down time but are highly effective that are done under local anesthesia, they are done in the office, so they really have no significant long term health risks.
