Dr. Gonzalez describes the LAP-BAND® procedure.

Dr. Gonzalez:
The LAP-BAND® procedure is an adjustable gastric band. The LAP-BAND® in and of itself is one of the two laparoscopic adjustable bands available in our country. The adjustable bands are little bands, little lifesavers that are placed around the top portion of the stomach in order to restrict the amount of food that the patient eats.

So, the bands are adjusted, a needle is placed into a port device that’s placed in the upper abdomen, and through instillation of fluid you can tighten or loosen the band, and therefore the patient will feel a sense of restriction and will control the amount of food the patient eats. It will not control the type of food the patient eats. So currently, there are two laparoscopic adjustable bands available in our country – the LAP-BAND® and the REALIZE Band.
