My tongue seems to have a thick coating of stuff on it. I also have alot of bumps/spots mostly at the back of my mouth. The thing is, i seem to have noticed this only happens when i drink coke, and in the morning my mouth feels like fur with this coating on. Does anyone know what this is and what i can do about it?

Thank you for your question, anonymous. A 'furry tongue' is common as most people experience this and what it is actually is, is a build up of bacteria. This can be brushed off daily when you brush your teeth, just brush your tongue also.

Now if you have an excessive 'furry tongue' there could be an issue. What you can do is take your fingernail and scrape down the middle of your tongue. If there is a deep groove, there could be problem which may be an overgrowth of yeast that actually lives in your digestive tract but will move up into your mouth. Is the coating cheese-like? Lumpy?

Research suggests that if you are experiencing an overgrowth, you can be treated with anti-fungal medications that will help clear up the excess. This condition is commonly called Candida albicans. Here is a link for more information http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/213853-overview.

If there is not an overgrowth, try to stop drinking Coke and see if the issue cures itself. Most of the things associated with our tongues have the root cause from the stomach and esophagus areas and not necessarily specific to the mouth.

I hope this information helps. If you find there is an excessive amount, please contact your physician. Keep us updated.
