Q:

What can I do for a severe earache?

About 2 weeks ago I passed out and sustained a sprain to my hand/wrist. During the fall I hit the left side of my jaw on the tub and hit the right side of my jaw on the toilet. Dr thought my earache was actually due to the tm joint injury. To date the earache still hurts severely. When checked by a different medical person she said there were some bubbles inside which could be flared up cause of an allergy. I've never known an allergy to be so painful. There is pain in the ear, down the, and in the neck. Imaging does not show any fractures to the jaw. I need to know what I can do myself to get some kind of relief from this pain. Have taken Tylenol 3 but that doesn't even touch the pain.

Hello. Thanks for posting.

Tylenol has never worked for me either, not for moderate to severe pain. Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) or Naproxen (Aleve) are better choices - if you can take them. They typically last all day and are good for pain and inflammation. If these do not help, you really should follow up with your doctor.
