I have migraine headaches and I have heard of people keeping a migraine diary. I was wondering how detailed it needs to be to actually help a doctor figure out what might be causing them?

This is very interesting. I've had migraines for years, but never really tracked them to determine triggers or patterns. I just figured they came on whenever.
Does anyone else out there keep a migraine diary?
If so, has it helped you determine your triggers and a plan for controlling them?

Hey Anne, Thanks for writing. Keeping a migraine diary is a great idea so you and your doctor can work out a plan to control them. You may want to consider the following:
What time/days do they occur?
What triggers your headaches; did you notice a certain reaction after eating a certain food such as aged cheese? Did you drink caffeine?
What medications did you take and when?
What behaviors did you engage in before the headache occurred? Do you find that exercise helps alleviates your headaches?
What was your sleep pattern the night before?
You may also find this video on migraines helpful.

Anyone else have other suggestions?
