Hi Anonymous

Are you saying you took the pill every day but one day you took it late? If that is the case, you should be fine. When you say unprotected sex do you mean you didn't take the pill? I'm kind of confused by your question.

If you have sex while you are on the pill, that is not unprotected sex. If you take the pill every day and just take it late one day, that is not unprotected sex.

If I have totally misunderstood your question, please let me know.

Hi Anonymous,
Hi Anonymous,
Implantation bleeding doesn't always happen, but generally speaking, may occur 10-14 days after having unprotected sex. Consider where you are in your cycle when bleeding is present, and figure what type of bleeding it is. You may want to keep a diary of sorts to keep track of changes in your period and your cycle. If you are concerned, call your doctor, or take a pregnancy test if you miss your period.
Good luck and thanks for your question.

ive been taking birth control for a while, and about a week ago i missed a couple of pills in a row ( and i took them when i remembered) but i guess i had what was breakthrough bleeding because it was pretty light and it was kind-of a brown color, but when i started taking my pills again it went away after a few days but tonight after i went to the bathroom i noticed some bright red blood and i haven't missed any pills since that time so what could this be?

Hi Anonymous,
Yes, the birth control pill is only as effective as how well you take it. You need to take it on time every day. That is the only way to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy, besides for not having unprotected sex.
The bleeding you're getting may be what's called pill withdrawal bleeding; it's not uncommon to get that when you forget to take your pills. If you are just starting the pill, are you using a backup method? It's a good idea to use condoms or spermicide (or other birth control method) for a while until you are on the pill for a while. Make sure you completely read the paper that came with your prescription. That patient insert explains when to take the pill, and what to do if you miss pills, etc.
Typically, do you brush them at the same time every day? It may be a good idea to take the pills at the same time as you brush your teeth so you don't forget to take them. Keep your pills with the tooth paste, so you don't forget. If you do regularly forget, and can't find a way to remember to take them, the pill may not be right for you. Talk with the prescribing doctor to find a better method for you.

I started taking birth control for the first time in my life about a week ago. I am on my 2nd week of pills and have missed 3 pills. I have also had unprotected sex twice this week and have been spotting. Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

I missed my whole first week of pills because I wasn't able to pick them up from the pharmacy. I had unprotected sex. I believe there is a chance I could be pregnant. I havnt had my period since the middle of august. I just took my last pill today. How long before my period should start? I only think there may be a chance of me being pregnant because I looked up signs of pregnancy and I've had headaches I was nauseous a few times but never thew up, also about a week and a half ago my nipples were very sensitive and swollen.

Hi Anonymous,
Unfortunately signs of pregnancy and menstruation can be similar and hard to distinguish. If you don't get your period in a week, you may want to take a pregnancy test. Make sure you begin your next pack of pills. If the pregnancy test turns out positive, call your doctor.
Anytime you have sex and don't use birth control (condom, spermicide or take your pills on time), you put yourself at risk for getting pregnant.
Good luck and let us know how you are.

Hi Anonymous,
Implantation bleeding would not occur until 10-14 days after having unprotected sex. If this rusty discharge happened a few days after forgetting to take your pills, it's probably what's called withdrawal bleeding. If it continues, you may want to call your doctor who prescribed the pills to you.
