April,
I assume the i- ill you took was a typo, and you took a form of emergency contraception?

Please read the information from your EC; if you bleed soon after taking EC (and were not expecting your period), it is likely breakthrough bleeding. You will need to wait until your next period to know if you are pregnant or not. Your period may be a week early or a week late.

For more information, please review this article: Emergency Contraception Update, 2010.

Quick question. Like everyone on here I'm freaking out a bit and can't stand the idea of having to wait for 3 weeks to see if I get my period.
So I'm on the pill for my skin mostly and am never very careful about what time I take it. I'm on Yasmin so have 12 hours leeway I think(?). Anyway, it's not predominantly a method of contraception for me. In week 1 of my pills this time I was late taking my pill twice. I usually take it in the morning but took it at night on these two days and can't remember if it was more than 12 hours as I wasn't expecting to be having sex and so wasn't too bothered. On Saturday (7 days into my active pills) I had unprotected sex (idiot) and am now freaking out that I might be pregnant. I know you can't tell me that I won't be with any certainty but I was just wondering what the odds were. Am really really really hoping they're slim . . .

Hi anonymous,
You're on the pill and taking it every day, so you did not have what's considered unprotected sex. Unprotected sex is when you have sex and use no birth control of any kind. Mind you, the pill is MORE effective if you take it at the same time everyday, but you should be ok. You may want to use condoms as a backup method "just in case" in the future and to also protect from STD/STIs.
Here are a couple articles about taking birth control correctly, and why it's important:

Good luck and let us know how you're dong.

Hi Christine,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I've got a week to go until I should be on my period so I'll let you know. Fingers crossed. This whole thing has freaked me out a bit. I'm 26 now and I was originally waiting for marriage to start having sex, then slept with my long term boyfriend last year and then broke up with him. This year has been a bit head mental for me and the fact that I've since slept with two guys is really bothering me. I've always (stupidly) thought of STD's as this distant problem that doesn't really concern me as I had chosen to wait. Unfortunately I didn't really re-think that before sleeping with these two guys. (My long term boyfriend was my first and he had been checked) The second I always used a condom with (except one time where we started but stopped after literally 2 seconds and got a condom) but the third I didn't and am now really freaking out. He pulled out but I know how stupidly unreliable that is - especially regarding STD's. I've been reading up about STD's and HIV and I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack! I'm sorry to hijack your wall as I know this is supposed to be about pregnancy and the pill but . . . I'm freaking out. Again! From what I can gather I need to wait 3 weeks and then have STD checks done and then 3 months to have a HIV check done and then have another HIV check done in 6 months. Is this right and do you think I'm high risk? I totally know you can't possibly know that but I think I'm just looking for some reassurance while I wait 3 WHOLE MONTHS :( Can't believe I've put myself in such a stupid position.

Hi sgab,
Thanks for your question and for finding EmpowHER. As you know, anytime you forget to take your pills it increases your risk of getting pregnant. When you forget, it's always a good idea to use a backup method (like condoms, spermicide, or withdrawal), especially if you forget often. If you find you are forgetting a lot, you may want to call your doctor to see if maybe a different form of birth control may be right for you.
The important thing right now though, is getting back on track with your pills, and not putting yourself at future risk.
For more information about how to get back on track and not put yourself at future risk, please review these articles: Missing Birth Control Pills and Concerned About Pregnancy: Q&A and and Oops! Missed Birth Control Pill Advocacy Sheet
Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

I had unprotected sex 3 weeks ago. Im on birth control and had my period. I been feeling sick to my stomach( nausea, vomiting and lower back pain and I gain a little weight). two month ago I miss 5 pills in total and didnt get my perod and last month I miss 3 pills and this month I haven't started my pack yet because I still feel sick to my stomach and feeling nausea every morning and sometimes thru the day but it comes and go. Is it a slight chance that I can pregnant? forgot to mention that I also had unprotected sex this month on november 15.

Hi Miss,
Please review the articles posted here, and review other comments from Guides like myself:

As we tell everyone on this thread, if you forget to take your pills, you run the risk of getting pregnant. Not taking your pills and not using a backup method is super risky. What you did on Nov. 15th would not affect your current waiting for your period. If you are concerned, take a home pregnancy test when you have missed your period. If it's positive, call your doctor's office to receive instructions on how to proceed. If it's negative, you're not pregnant, and should work to get back on track with your pills (start a new pack and be diligent about taking it every day and about the same time).
