Guide

Tinnitus is the medical term for hearing noises in your ear when there is no outside source for the noises. It can sound like ringing, buzzing, humming or hissing.

It is a symptom of an ear infection, wax in the ear, injury from loud noises or Meniere's disease, which is an inner ear disorder that is associated with hearing loss and dizziness. It can be a sign of high blood pressure, an allergy or anemia.

Home remedies include avoiding alcohol, caffeine and smoking. Try to reduce your stress levels, because stress can make it worse. Try sleeping with your head elevated by using an extra pillow. Avoid loud noises and sounds. Wear ear plugs if necessary.

You need to consult your physician if the tinnitus started after a head injury, if you are experiencing unexplained symptoms of dizziness, feeling off balance, nausea or vomiting, or if you do not get any relief from the self-help measures.
