Dr. Jones explains if the Human Papillomavirus/HPV will show up on a woman's routine medical screening.
Dr. Jones:
If she has HPV it will not show up in a routine pap unless it is progressed to something called cervical dysplasia which is where the cells become abnormal; that’s when it will show up. It will show up also if when you get a pap done, if you add on something called an HPV DNA probe.
Basically, it’s a very hi-tech test that lets the doctor know if HPV is in the area but hasn’t yet affected the cells. So if that’s positive, but the pap is normal, you know HPV is in the area it just hasn’t yet done its thing. But you do know you have HPV if you get an abnormal pap back because abnormal paps are due to the HPV virus.
