STD: What Do You Tell Women After Their Diagnosis? - Dr. Grobe

Dr. Grobe shares what she tells women who have just been diagnosed with an STD (sexually transmitted disease).

Dr. Grobe:
Being initially diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease can be very emotionally jarring.

You are working emotionally on two levels – you are associating with the stigma of having sexually transmitted infection, and then you may also be dealing with the issue of what your partner is doing and how you got that sexually transmitted infection.

With the stigma associated with sexually transmitted infection these days the stigma is much, much different than it was in the past.

We are much more sexually active these days therefore sexually transmitted infections are much more prevalent than they were in the past, much more common, much more easily treated.

So they are not the kind of the health death sentence that they used to be. There was once a time when the diagnosis of herpes, you know, I remember a comedian saying it was like a luggage, it was something you had forever.

And these days it’s very easily treated, very easily prevented. You can go on to have a very healthy, natural sex life. You can go on to have a very healthy natural pregnancy and healthy natural delivery.

So the stigma associated with sexually transmitted infections in these modern times are not the same as they were.

However, we still have that knee-jerk reaction to being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection that that stigma still applies.

And it’s something that women need and that I recommend that they kind of let themselves off the hook about.

It’s not their fault that this happened to them. It does not mean that they are dirty. It does not mean that they have done something wrong and that is the stigma that used to be associated with sexually transmitted infections.
