Susan introduces herself and shares her doctor's advice about the severe neck pain she experienced as a child.
Susan:
My name is Susan Jacobs and when I was in 8th grade I was really into gymnastics and dance and all kinds of sports. And, I used to do headstands on my parent’s stairs and I started noticing that my neck hurt a lot. And I started mentioning it to my parents and they told me, “Well, stop doing headstands. That’s probably the problem.” And I stopped, but the pain didn’t go away. So, eventually they took me to my pediatrician to further investigate what was the matter.
It’s been a long time since I was diagnosed, but I seem to recall that the pediatrician recommended that we go talk to a pediatric rheumatologist because it became obvious that it wasn’t just my neck. Other joints started to hurt, so we went to a specialist for children in rheumatology.
