Dr. Marlin Mills explains why Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona is considered one of the nation's leading centers for high-risk pregnancies.

Dr. Mills:
I think the main reason has been the interest of the maternal-fetal medicine specialists that work at the Banner facilities. Specifically this group has taken on a special interest – Dr. John Elliott has kind of led that interest within this group and I think any program where you have individuals with a passion that have the desire to become more actively involved, spend the time, get to know the research and become personally invested in these patients, you are going to improve the program and the care for these patients.

Well the community in this area does have a population of high-risk pregnant patients and so to be able to serve, particularly the East Valley area of the Phoenix Valley, the Banner Desert Medical Center has evolved and developed the expertise, has supported the subspecialty care for these mothers and babies and we look at the combined program as the necessary support system for moms and babies.

It’s not just moms; it’s not just babies, it’s the continuity care or the entire episode of care of the pregnancy that involves before the pregnancy care, during the pregnancy, the delivery and then care of the babies afterwards and often the planning and the timing in the care of mom and baby are integrated when the neonatologists and the maternal-fetal medicine specialists can work together and integrate that process, and that’s true not only at Banner Desert in the East Valley, but at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in the Phoenix area that has very similar program and development as well.
