Dr. Zarine Kotian explains what a woman can do if she is experiencing heavy menstrual cycles. Dr. Kotian is an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
A lot of women have a common complaint of heavy menstrual cycles, especially young girls when they are starting off their menstrual cycles they complain of cramps, heavy bleeding, not being able to go to school, missing days.

So this is a great opportunity for you to speak to your physician. There are ways that we can help you from taking birth control pills, to something as simple as taking Motrin, something that will help make your life better so that you can continue your education.

A lot of women are concerned about heavy menstrual cycles. If you’re cycles are, if you’re soaking more than one to two pads for more than one to two hours that’s considered pretty heavy flow, especially if this happens for more than two or three days.

The normal menstrual cycle can last anywhere from three days to seven days. If it is lasting longer than that, you should really speak to your physician just to make sure that there’s no other medical conditions. It might be something abnormal with your uterus, fibroids, something that’s causing your bleeding to be heavy that can be perhaps fixed.
