Shay Pausa interviews country singer Martina McBride about her heart-healthy lifestyle and raising her children to make healthy eating choices.

Shay Pausa:
Today’s guest needs very little introduction. We all know her songs and today the beautiful woman singing them joins us - country music star Martina McBride. Welcome to EmpowHER, Martina.

Martina McBride:
Thank you.

Shay Pausa:
So today’s visit really is one for the girls. You are on a campaign to help women take care of themselves and their heart. Tell us about the campaign and what prompted you to get involved?

Martina McBride:
Well, actually I have teamed up with Cheerios. They approached me about raising awareness about heart health and it’s just something that resonated with me as the mother of three daughters and as a woman who is very busy and could identify with the fact that, as women, sometimes we don’t always take time for ourselves to take care of our ourselves. We are busy taking care of everyone else.

So I just thought it was important to get the message out that heart disease is the number one killer of American women, which I found shocking. I did not know that. So it’s just important to me to get the message out to women everywhere to take care of themselves.

Shay Pausa:
So you really are managing it all. You obviously have a very full career. You have a successful marriage with John and you have those three beautiful girls. How do you manage to do it all?

Martina McBride:
Well it’s difficult, and I mean, I think that’s the challenge that women face today is we are so busy taking care of everyone else and taking care of our job and our household, definitely multitasking and trying to be everything to everybody and it’s just hard to realize when we feel guilty sometimes I think about taking some time out each day to exercise or maybe to prepare a healthy meal for ourselves instead of…

You know, sometimes like for instance it’s lunchtime and I am the only one in the house. My kids are at school; ohn is at work, and so, for me to take the time to make myself a nice, healthy salad or a healthy lunch that’s heart healthy rather than just grabbing something to go or something quick is a little bit of a luxury but it’s so important.

Shay Pausa:
So do you take that time? Do you make something ahead or how do you do it?

Martina McBride:
You know, a little bit of both. Sometimes I’ll make up a salad the night before so that it’s easy, you know, the chopping and all that is the hard part. So if you can do all that maybe the night before after the kids go to bed or whatever, and just keep it in the refrigerator and that way it’s just easy to grab and throw together and put a little olive oil and lemon and dressing on there and you are good to go.

Shay Pausa:
And how old are your girls now?

Martina McBride:
They are 15, 12 and 5.

Shay Pausa:
And are you seeing that by leading by example that they are also trying to make healthy choices so that when they grow up to be woman they will actually make those choices automatically?

Martina McBride:
Absolutely, I do see that. I see it every day in the choices they make and part of it is just, you know, kids are like they soak up whatever you teach them and you know from the time they were little I have always emphasized making healthy food choices and I can see that it worked because obviously they are kids. They are going to have junk sometimes, but most of the time they make really healthy choices and they eat well.

Shay Pausa:
That’s good. Where should we go for more information about the campaign?

Martina McBride:
Cheerios.com/love and go on there and find out all kinds of stuff and if you commit to having a healthy heart or to doing, trying to have a healthy heart you can win prizes too.

Shay Pausa:
Hey we like that - be healthy and win things. Thank you so much Martina.

Martina McBride:
You bet, thank you.

Shay Pausa:
What a great effort. Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. You can find great information on how to protect yourself and fight heart disease on EmpowHER.com.

Thanks for joining me today. I am Shay Pausa for EmpowHER. Be sure to share this video on Facebook or Twitter. It could make the difference in another woman’s life.
