Jean shares how living with diabetes has affected her life.
Jean:
Well, as a child and not knowing a lot of things, I was in the hospital probably once a month with extremely high blood sugars and sometimes in comas, and by the time I got to be 10-years-old I thought there has to be something better, a better way to live than this.
When I was 12-years old we moved from Indiana to California. Well fortunately for me when we moved here I had to get a doctor, I got an extremely good doctor. He was very strict. He explained a lot of things to me. He told me, “Go and self-teach.” So I began to read literature, find out different things about diabetes and what it was, I really should be paying attention to and needed to do.
It was not an easy thing having diabetes with pregnancies because I am very brittle. I go up and down very easy, but I managed to get through three of them. A couple of children were not real healthy. My third one is and she is still going and doing very well.
