Birth-pills are rightly considered to be the best contraceptive method. Even though these pills are convenient and 90% effective, still most women are afraid to take them. The reason for their fear is hundreds of myths about birth-pills, that have turned them into monsters in women’s eyes.
But what if everything you know about birth control pills are not even close to the truth? What if all the myths existing around this contraceptive method have nothing to do with reality? Let’s try to dispel most common ones.
Birth pills increase risk of breast cancer
People used to think that taking oral contraceptives increases risk of breast cancer. But recent research has proved the opposite. Birth pills don’t influence breast cancer development. In fact, they reduce odds of getting this terminal illness and even help to prevent it. Besides breast cancer, birth pills are effective against ovarian cancer and elapsing hyperplastic process of endometrium.
And there is quite reasonable explanation to these discoveries. By nature, woman’s body is designed to give birth quite often. When pregnancy doesn’t occur, that causes some problems in organism. This is where birth pills can be very helpful. They simulate pregnancy and mitigate risk of numerous diseases.
Birth pills provoke weight gain
That’s another myth that keeps women from taking oral contraceptives. But it is not justified. Not only modern birth pills don’t cause excess weight but even help to normalize it. However, they increase appetite, which may lead to getting on some extra pounds.
Still there is no uncontrolled weight gain or water retention caused by birth pills. Moreover, if you take medications that match your organism, there are no worries concerning getting fat.
A woman should undergo hormone test before taking birth pills
That sounds quite reasonable but, in fact, it’s not necessarily that a woman should undergo expensive hormone tests before taking birth pills. For a professional gynecologist it’s quite enough to make physical examination, take some tests and make the right prescription. Actually, all women have nearly identical endocrine profile the changes of which usually result in menstrual disorder or excess weight. If you’ve spotted any of the symptoms about your organism, then you should turn to endocrinologist who will take necessary tests.
Usually, birth pills are selected based on woman’s age, whether she is parous or not and her health condition.
Birth pills cause female infertility
Running ahead of the story, there is no connection between birth pills and infertility. If a woman can’t get pregnant after she stops taking birth pills, the problem is likely to have occurred earlier, even before pills intake.
Physiologically, when a woman takes birth pills, her organism is having rest. But when she stops taking medications, the whole process starts anew with greater force. That’s why ovulation comes earlier than expected. Some doctors even recommend taking pills to those couples who can’t father a child.

Hello LizTaylor,
Thank you for sharing facts about birth control pills.
A basic fact is how do oral contraceptives work.
Birth control pills prevent pregnancy through several mechanisms, mainly by stopping ovulation. If no egg is released, there is nothing to be fertilized by sperm, and the woman cannot get pregnant.
Most birth control pills contain synthetic forms of two female hormones: estrogen and progestin. These synthetic hormones stabilize a woman's natural hormone levels, and prevent estrogen from peaking mid-cycle. Without the estrogen bump, the pituitary gland does not release other hormones that normally cause the ovaries to release mature eggs.
A concern for women who develop an estrogen positive type of breast cancer is the daily dose of estrogen in the oral contraceptive. It is important for all women to discuss their concerns with their gynecologists.
