well it all started 3 years ago, when i found out my kidney's are failing. The doctor said the kidney's should start failing around 10 years from now. Apparently kidney's had other ideas on that. Because right now i'm 4.5 percent and at 5.5 percent is a total shut down for my weight and height. I have Berger's Disease. It suppose to be a heredity but neither side of my family has ever had it.

Hi Katrog - We haven't heard from you in a while, so I wanted to check in and see how you're doing. Have you been able to quit tobacco? That's a very tough challenge for most people. Are you doing well on dialysis? Hope so. If you feel up to it we would love to get an update from you. Take good care.

I am not on the transplant list yet. Not until I quit tobacco. I am 45 years old. And yes, I wanted more info but you gave more thank you. I will be going on diaylsis at the end of June. On somedays I feel bad and disappointed. I have been going to school for Medical Billing and had to stop that. And now I'm going on disablility. What a life. Or not.
June 5, 2009 - 6:20pmI haven't had any infections, including HIV infection. But they took blood today for HIV status. And no I have'nt and inflammation of anything.

Hi, Katrog, and welcome to EmpowHer. Thank you so much for your question.
What can we help you with?
Are you a candidate for a kidney transplant?
Would you tell me about how old you are?
Are you hoping for more information on Berger's Disease?
What do the doctors want to do to treat your condition?
And are you on any medications for it? Are you on dialysis?
We have a page on Berger's Disease in our medical library, here's a link to it:

Here is the Mayo Clinic's page on Berger's Disease, which is also called IgA nephropathy. It apparently is more common than you would think, and interestingly, it says only that it appears to have a genetic component in some people, but not all. Please be sure to notice the links you can click on at the left of the page that talk about causes, symptoms and treatments:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/iga-nephropathy/DS00856
In IgA nephropathy, what happens is that ImmunoglobinA, an antibody that occurs naturally in our immune systems and attacks intruders, for some reason start collecting in the kidneys and affect the way they can filter waste.
This is from the Mayo page:
"IgA nephropathy is also sometimes associated with other conditions, including:
-- Cirrhosis, a condition in which scar tissue replaces normal tissue within the liver
-- Celiac disease, a digestive condition triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in most grains
-- Dermatitis herpetiformis, an itchy, blistering skin disease that stems from gluten intolerance
-- Infections, including HIV infection and bacterial infections
-- Henoch-Schonlein purpura, a condition that results from inflammation of the small blood vessels of the skin, joints, intestine and kidneys."
Have you had any of those conditions?
What do the doctors say at this point? Have you had more than one opinion?
I would love to hear back from you.
