What is a Sty and how do you get one?

My eye is red and puffy and i've been told I have a sty. I haven't been to a doctor yet. Are there things I can do to reduce the swelling? And how did I get this? Is it contagious? I don't look very pretty right now and it is very red and swollen. Seems to be at the eyelash line of my lower lid.

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER A sty is a red and painful bump on the edge of your eyelid. In most cases it will disappear in a few days on it's own. It's mainly caused by bacteria. Touching or rubbing your eyes with unwashed hands can transfer the bacteria to the eye. You can reduce the discomfort by applying a warm clothes to the area. If the swelling does not go away in a few days, it's best then to see your doctor.  Hope this was helpful?

Here is  a link that might be helpful.
