What causes neck & shoulder pain when laying down?

One possible cause may be a pinched nerve in your neck which can cause pain to radiate to the shoulder. Rotator cuff bursitis or tendonitis might also cause pain or more pain at night when lying down. It might also be your sleep position and/or your pillow. Change your pillow and position. See if that helps. If the pain persists or worsens, an evaluation with a doctor can tell you more.
