Q:

Is there ever a time when a surgeon does a partial thyroid removal with someone that has Graves Disease? My surgeon is insisting on a total removal but I am reading some info. that is pushing me to have a partial. Any information would be most helpful.

I was diagnosed with Graves disease in Dec. 2009. I am allergic to PTU and tapazole. My doc is not recommending RAI.

Anon - Yes, some patients have a partial removal. Do you have an endocrinologist who is responsible for the overall management of your care? I would discuss your concerns and options with your endocrinologist. If you are not comfortable with the recommendations of the surgeon who wants to do a full removal I would work with your endocrinologist to get a recommendation for a second surgeon to meet with for a second opinion. You may, or may not, be a candidate for a partial removal but you won't know unless you thoroughly explore all of your options. Good luck to you.
