I was told 5 yrs ago that I have PCOS by a GYN. He told me to follow up with an OBGYN and that he or she would be able to help me with treatment. I went to 3 OBGYN's and all just wanted to put me on Birthcontrol. I would refuse because, I wanted to become pregnant again. I did not know much about this disorder and the serious of it. My husband and I just wanted to have a child without medication. So, we left without any help. We said "if it was meant to be it would just happen". Well it never did and life passed us by. We are at peace without the idea that we are not going to have another child. My husband and I just want to take care of me and get treatment for PCOS not concievement. I've been on the Internet for the pass month looking on issues that I currently have and got worse this yr. I see that the PCOS is invading my body. I've reached out to a local Hospital in the area. I had entered Pelvic and sex pain in there site and it leaded me to a PT contact . She was able to give my 2 out of area Dr's that could help me. I do not have coverage there and than asked that they find me a Dr that understand's and can treat PCOS. They gave my the GYN that I went to 5yrs ago. I will be seeing him this Monday am. I will see where that goes'. I did not find EmpowHer until after I set this up. If I only new the different Dr's that are able to help I would of went else where for Insurance reason's. Who and what kind of Dr is the right Dr to see for ongoing treatment. I see that it is important to be in a support group, is there any that you know of in the Buffalo NY area 14225?

Thanks EmporHER for the great info and being there for us :)

I also have PCOS and in the Buffalo area. I am 24 and my husband and I have been trying for 2 years and I am tired of everyone else around me having children while we are struggling. I have not found a good doctor or one who specializes in PCOS and would like some direction into what doctor I should go and see. Please if anyone can email me or contact me I would appreciate it. Thanks again!!!!! I will never give up on having children because it is the one thing I want most in this world!

I have heard a lot of good things about Metformin for women with PCOS (I am currently on it and noticed my cycles are coming back again after missing for some time). It helps with insulin resistance, etc that most women with PCOS suffer from. There are hundddreeds of websites on the internet about PCOS, some great ones are http://thyroid.about.com/ Mary Shomon is an amazing advocate for those with PCOS, might want to check out her book. Also PCOS Diva is another good website, forgot their URL though. Look up your provider online, usually there is a list you can choose from for doctors, and you can also look up ratings by searching for that doctors name. Im in PA currently and going to an Endocrinologist in Middletown and I thank god I found her. It does take a bit of research, maybe look for an Endocrinologist instead of a GYNO, helped me. I also have hypothyroidism though, didn't know I had both until recently...might be worth looking into. I'm not currently trying to have children but I very badly want them in the future, you have to take care of your own health first, take it slow and hopefully you find a great doctor soon!

I am in the same boat you are in. My husband and I are looking to have children in the next year or two and I have PCOS. I do not have a GYN yet and I do not know who to go to. I googled PCOS specialist in Buffalo and it brought me to your post. I am in Cheektowaga, but till drive as far as I go for good care. I was wondering if you could e-mail me the name of the doctor you see if they have been helpful, I am 30 years old and have not been on birth control for over a year and I have yet to get pregnant.
Any info anyone can give me would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks!

Hi Kraebel,

I am glad you are getting some answers and some help. PCOS is becoming more and more common and can be difficult to resolve. You may want to consider consulting a naturopathic physician for alternative and supportive therapy. www.naturopathic.org is a website where you can find a qualified ND in your area. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Update from Dr's, Monday 12/14 ...
Well I finally got some answer's :) The Dr did indeed see a large amount of cysts on the overlies. He also noticed that my lying was very thick. Dr is definitely sticking with the original diagnosis PCOS. He is going to have me get blood work done in the morning (12hr fasting) Than he has referred me to an OBGYN that he works with on a regular basis for a Pap smear. Than on 12/30 he is going to do a test that will allow him to get a better look and take some tests to help him decide what is the correct plan and or procedure for me.
Dr has put me on birth control just for now so that I stop bleeding and regain a normal cycle. Also, he is unable to do the testing on 12/30 if I'm bleeding.
I was able to go and check out the link's.....they all are great and full of info!!!
Thanks again, I will update when I see the OBGYN.
