Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

There have been a lot of updates recently so I will add mine too. :)
I continue PT and I finally got an MRI ordered from my Orotho doc.
I should know the results on Wed so I will post back then.

PT has shown that I have improved in my range of motion but still have a lot of pain for certain movements and a sudden jurk can throw me into a real painful episode requiring me to sit down and ride out the pain. Well I have Vicodin from my primary to help with the pain when it just wont go away but my Ortho does not seem like he likes me using the Vicodin. He was also gun shy on antiinflamatorys since my reaction to Mobic. But he allowed me to go back on Etocolac since I was on that for a month without any problems but I had felt it was not helping before. But now with PT and having the cortizone shot the Etocolac might work better.
He wants me to slowly ramp up the dose till we are sure I wont show signs of CHF again.

Hi, I've posted on here in the past under the same name. It has been over 9 months since I had the flu shot injury, and I am still battling pain and range of motion problems. I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery back in February. I did ok for awhile with PT, but as soon as I began to do full duty and increase strengthening exercises the pain began again. I can't reach for things, get dressed, do dishes or clothes, do certain exercises, push open or pull close a door, etc. I dont know what the next course of action may be. The surgeon did remove my entire bursa; it was completely inflamed from the components of the vaccine. I may have another MRI or steroid shot. I take a multivitamin and have tried mobic then celebrex. Just very frustrated. Thank you all for all of your posts.

Oh boy, you didn't need those additional problems! Glad you're feeling better now, but what an awful experience. How is your arm/shoulder? Are you still in pain?

Boy I have a lot to add since my last update.
Ortho had started me on Meloxicam (aka Mobic) as an anti-inflamatory. Well I was on that med for about 2 1/2 days during which I began experiance CHF symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain and swelling in the legs. Well I saw my cardiologist on Monday after having taken the med over the weekend. Well my Cardio took me off the med and ran me through the stress tests and an echo gram. After which he did a Heart Cath. Heart Cath came back clean, only slightly enlarged heart (my mom has an enlarged heart also). I still have yet to start my eval for my therapy or a new med for my shoulder...however the shot I took has seemed to do me some good. Now if we can find a med that does not try to kill me. I now have to list the new med as an alergic reaction med.
Turns out 1% of the people on Mobic experiance CHF symptoms.
Definately was the drug...much better since I stopped it.

I got a cortizone shot on Friday when I saw the ortho doc for the first time. It felt great right after the shot...but my shoulder has been paining me over the weekend. I am supposed to start my therapy soon. I see them on Monday for my eval.

I'm sorry to hear that the cortisone shot was not successful long-term. Please let us know how your physical therapy goes, as it did help the member (who posted a few messages above). Best wishes!!

I took a cortisone shot about 6 weeks ago because the ortho doc really felt like I needed to give it a chance. I dropped out of Physical Therapy for a few weeks because of work and travel demands. I was making progress since taking the shot, but I reached forward suddenly on Monday and the familiar agonizing painwas RIGHT there to greet me. This is soooooo frustrating. I will see the ortho doc again on the 22nd of June. PT seems to be the only real help that has worked for me. It has been 9 months.
