Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

Okay, I am one that has made it through this entire process. I received my flu shot in Sept 2012 and knew immediately that something went terribly wrong-my shoulder felt separated. I then went on a journey through physical therapy, anti-amflammatories, multiple dr/ortho visits...finally an MRI and proof that I had a torn tendon. This ended up requiring surgery (March 2013) and the pain finally subsided! If I can give any advice, please DOCUMENT everything--none of the doctors I saw had ever heard of this, it was so frustrating and of course friends/family thought I was crazy as well. BUT, through my own research and the help of another forum member, I learned quickly about Shoulder Related Injury Due to Vaccination--please look this up, print the info, take it to someone that will listen...report your injury to VAERS and again, keep records of everything because there are also lawyers that specialize in these cases--look up Carol Gallagher in NJ (though I live in MO, she helped so much). You all are not crazy, there are plenty of us that have been through what you're going through--keep up the good fight and get relief. I lived six months in that agonizing pain and it affected me every moment of every day.

Thank you! I researched it and so we are not crazy. Thankfully my arm is doing better and not as bad as is was. I am thinking It is going away. I will not get another flu shot.

I got a flu shot, in my upper left shoulder, on Oct. 3, 2014. It was given at the drugstore by the pharmacist. It hurt the first day, then it felt normal UNTIL Oct. 9. From that time on, I have been in severe pain from my upper left shoulder to my wrist. I cannot raise my arm when I rise - after a bad night of not being able to sleep on my left side. I need to take a hot shower, rub down with ointment and take two aspirin to move my arm quasi normally. I just went back to the drugstore, and the pharmacist said to take aspirin. It's been a week and a half! How much longer?! If I survive, I'm taking this flu vaccine orally from here on out. I'm obviously not alone and feel the problem should be made more public.

Had my flu shot a month ago and am still in lot of pain.cant sleep due to the pain. Went to the pharmacy where I got the shot to inquire about it only to be told that this never happens, making me sound like it was in my imagination. Well, im here to tell you that I could certainly put my Imagination to much better use. I just want the pain to stop.nothing helps.its very frustrating having pain that you cannot treat and not caused by anything you did. What do I do?

Just reading on here there is definitely something wrong with some of the flu shots. My husband had his 3 weeks after I did and he is fine. I was sore and sick to stomach for a little over 3 weeks. Couldn't sleep on left side, muscles hurt and just constant dull pain in all of upper body and I felt like I had the flu for 3 weeks. I can say it is better today but not yet back to 100 %. I can hope it all goes away. my doctor said to come in and she her but I did not just figured it will go away. Wishing you the best..

My husband received vaccine 5 days ago and has developed severe pain in his upper left chest, on the side of the shot. He is in severe pain; coughing hurts, blowing nose hurts, lifting arm hurts. He had a headache for days, which has lessened. Will try to see dr tomorrow....heating pad hasn't helped and he can't take otc pain relievers. SCARY.
