Thank you very much for the info it was helpful. At this point I am gonna have to wait and see what happenes and also take a trip to my pharmacy. Then I guess it becomes a waiting game after that. Again though thank you very muchf or taking the time to answer my question. I was under the impression after reading on the internet that it could take some time before a women who was on the pill to begin ovulating again. For her own body to get back to a normal and work as it should.

It can, you are right. Sometimes after women stop the pill, it takes two to three months to get back to normal. That's especially frustrating for women who are hoping to conceive. But other women do conceive in the first month of going off the pill. And a very small number of women conceive while on the pill -- between 1% and 3%. We are all so different that there's just no predicting from one individual to the next.

Hang in there, and I hope everything is fine. Will you come back and update us when you know something?

I have been on birth control since I was 14 I am now 28 years old. I was on orthtricyclin 28 day cycle sunday starter for a while then was switched to trivora 28 day cycle Sunday starter. I have been on that for many years. In Jan 2010 I missed a month of pills. I got my period right on time Jan 21st 2010, but it was heavier then normal. I started taking my pills again on the Sunday jan 24th when I was supposed to start the new pact. I took all that months pills got my period in Feb on the 18th 2010. I missed some of the sugar pills for the 4th week and was unable to get a new pack of pills to start Sunday Feb 21st . It is now March 2nd and I finally have gotten my pills. I had unprotected sex Feb 28th and today march 2nd. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I should be worried or if I was correct in assuming that being on the pill for 14 years it wouldn't be a a big deal if I missed and was sexually active. I guess what I am asking is could I get pregnant even though I was on the pill as long as I was and I have only missed 9 pills as of right now march 2nd. I am kind of unsure I have been having some craping since yesterday march 1st and the sides of my breast are sore.
A Quick sum up:
Been on the pill for 14 years
Missed starting a new pack by 9 days as well as some of the sugar pills.
Have had 2 counts of unprotected sex feb 28 and march 2nd.
First day of last period was Feb 18th.
Was supposed to start new pill pack Feb 21st.
Could I get pregnant and when would I ovulate?
Could I even ovulate being on the pill as long as I have been?

Anon,

Birth control pills don't have a residual effect. They are only in your system while you take them. So even though you have been on birth control for many years, the fact that you have missed 9 pills in a row and had unprotected sex means that you absolutely can get pregnant.

All it takes to get pregnant is sperm meeting the egg, and all it takes for an egg is for you to ovulate. Birth control pills generally stop ovulation, but as soon as you go off them, ovulation starts up again.

In general, when you have missed only three pills, you are supposed to use another form of contraception (like a condom) because you are not protected.

Since your last period came Feb. 18th, if your cycles are 28 days long, you most likely are ovulating now -- somewhere between March 2-4. And sperm can live for up to 3 days; some people say even longer. Since you had unprotected sex on the 28th, that sperm might still be alive, plus the sperm from the unprotected sex on the 2nd. So it's very possible you could be pregnant.

You wouldn't be feeling any signs of it since at most all that's happened is a fertilized egg has occurred. If you are concerned about pregnancy, you can go to a pharmacy and request Plan B, the emergency contraception that prevents implantation of a fertilized egg. It needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

And in the future, do know that until you hit menopause, you could ovulate and become pregnant. So you need to always practice some form of birth control to prevent it if it's not something you are hoping for.

Does this help?

It is now over a week later and I am back to taking the pills, i had to triple up but I havent had any spotting sense then and sense i took plan B....is that normal? I was expecting to get sick or at least have spotting from the combination of plan B and my birth control.

Anon,

Let me be sure I have this right.

day 1. took bc pill as normal, had unprotected sex
day 2. forgot birth control pill, took plan B
day 3. forgot birth control pill
day 4. forgot birth control pill
day 5 and beyond - tripled up on b/c pills to catch up

am I right? Is that the correct order? I'm not sure because it's not making sense to me that you'd have taken the plan B and then still forgotten pills the next two days. Please let me know if I have it wrong.

I'm a little surprised that you haven't had any side effects either, because all this is hormonal. But every woman is different, and side effects don't bother everyone. Your period may be affected by this. You didn't mention where you were in your cycle, but I am sure that if you took Plan B correctly, you are fine. You may still have some changes in your cycle or your period during the next few weeks.

Does that help a little? Or did I misinterpret?

Hi Alison, my name is Kathryn. I always take my pill on time (Friday start) but missed Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon (4 Pills) of week 3 of my Aviane because I messed up and thought I was supposed to be starting the sugar pills so needless to say I was waiting for my period to show up. When it didn't come by Tuesday, I knew somthing was wrong and checked my pack only to notice that I still had the full 3rd week of Active pills to take. Here is my situation. I had sex with my boyfriend on Saturday night and then took emergency contraception on Wednesday (within 120 hours). I have been spotting (brownish and some pink) for the past 11 days..and now I'm not sure if it was a perod or if I'm just spotting or when my period is actually supposed to start..it's all so messed up. I know that using emregency contraception screws everything up but can you let me know what you think. I know that when you are on birth control you don't ovulate and I heard that you don't ovulate at least until 7 days after you missed or stopped the pill. Also, after the emergency contraception, I started a new pack immediately instead of skipping the sugar pills altogether..let me know

Hi Kathryn,
I'm glad to hear that you took emergency contraception (EC), and it sounds like you read all of the information...that this "mega dose" of hormones can "mess up" your cycle, so it really does make it confusing to know when your period is supposed to start.

Since you have been spotting for 11 days, some of this could be a combination of "withdrawal bleeding" from not taking the pill, plus taking EC around the time of your expected "period". (As you said: women do not ovulate when they take the pill, and in order to have a menstrual cycle you must ovulate. So, the bleeding we experience and call our "period" during the time of sugar pills is technically "withdrawal bleeding"...our bodies are "withdrawing" from the lack of hormones for the week, even though we are still protected from pregnancy). It is all confusing!

You started your pills immediately after the EC...does that mean you took them Wednesday or Thursday, instead of waiting until your Friday start? It's fine if you took them "early", but just remember that you have a new start day-of-the-week from now on.

Spotting for 11 days seems a little long to be spotting, the reason it could have been a combination of a light "period" (withdrawal bleeding), but the only real way to know if the EC worked is to wait another cycle until your next week of sugar pills. If you do not have withdrawal bleeding during that week, you should take a home pregnancy test just to make sure.

It sounds like you did everything right, once you realized you missed your pills! It's also important to continue using a condom or other back-up form of birth control for 7 days after your missed pills.

Sorry to not be able to tell you that you definitely had a period, but every woman's body reacts different to the "mega dose" of EC. I hope to hear from you in a month to let us know that you began your sugar pills and are having withdrawal bleeding as expected!

Also sorry, me again (Kathryn)...I have been checking around the web and they say the worse time to miss pills is in the first or 3rd week and this mainly due to extending the length of hormone free period. I went 4 days without pills but technically only 3 days since having unprotected sex..and I continued on taking the pills...any insight on this?

Hi Alison, thanks for you reply. My start day (Friday) for the pills didn't change because I took the EC on Wednesday (5pills) then thursday am (5pills) and then just started the new pack of pills (1 per day) on the Friday instead of skipping my sugar pills week. Just so there is no confusion, I took what I thought was my last pill on Jan.28th..missed Jan.29/30/31 and Feb.1st pills..on the 2nd I took 1 pill then found the info on EC so I took the EC on The 3rd and 4th of Feb and started new pack on Feb.5th. With that said, I started spotting on Feb.14th and have had light spotting since, even today (very light brownish when I wipe). I am now done this pack I started and am on to the suger pills again..so I'm expecting my period come Monday but here I am still spotting so I have no idea. I will keep you posted for sure..thanks for you reply...

Kathryn
