I'm 29 yrs. old and I've been having my menstrual cycle for 3 weeks to 1 month with about a 2 week break between each period. Along with my period I have huge clots. This has been happening since I had my daughter in 2006. I saw a doctor about it and he just put me on birth control pills to try and regulate it, but that just caused me to have blood clots in my lungs. I went on Coumadin and my period was normal while I was on the meds. Now I'm off Coumadin and my period went back to being long again and with the huge clots. Is there something my doctors should be testing for? Why am I having a 3 week menstrual cycle? Can this cause complications with conceiving again? What is wrong with my cycle?

I'm 20 years old and Sunday will make 3 weeks straight of constant heavy and dark clotted period. I mean, I'm sorry to be raw or vulgar, but these clots are huge and there seems to be no end to the constant bleeding. Can somebody tell me what this is or how i can stop this? I am also anemic so this is really taking a toll on my body.
Please help??

Thanks! I really appreciate the tip! The pills I am taking are actually twice a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. Hopefully this is the same thing.

I have been having the same problem. My period lasted for 2 months before I was able to see a doctor. When I did get around to seeing a doctor, I was warned that this could be a very dangerous condition and that I should have come right away. After several tests everything (PCOS, cancer, prediabetes, cysts, etc). was ruled out except for a very steep hormone imbalance (estrogen levels very high, progesteron very low), mostlikely caused by stress and being overweight. The risks for having this disorder is REALLY scary. I did get a 2nd opionion from another doctor and she said the same thing.. you can almost expect to have uterine cancer within a year and the cancer will easily spread to other organs in the meantime. Diabetes is not far off either. I have been taking a very expensive medication called "Histerone" and my doctor is recommending a hormone IUD to control the progesterone until a more permanent solution (loosing weight, getting stress levels down etc.) can be found.. Despite the medication, my periods have NOT stopped only slightly have slowed down but still very large clots coming out. I have two children after being infertile for 7 years due to no periods. Now this. I do not plan to have any more children.

I have a huge problem, and I don't know anyone else that suffers from this. I am 23 years old and started my periods normal at age 12. Ever since I started, they have always been irregular. I didn't have a mother, so I never talked about it with anyone. THey were always super heavy and there was no telling when they would come or go. They would last from 1 week to 8 months, and be gone from a few days to a few months. There is no schedule at all. All these years and its still so unpredictable. I went to the doctor about 2 years ago because I got landed in the emergency room for low iron naturally. The doctors did extensive tests to see why I was bleeding so long. They did all sorts of blood tests, clot tests, x rays, invasive ultra sounds, specialists. Everything showed that I was perfectly healthy except for the low iron due to loss of blood. My ovaries and lining and blood counts- all was perfect. I'm perfectly healthy. So they tried doing a few hormone therapy birth controls, but even the strongest birth control didn't work- I bled all the way through. So they tried the methods that make you only have 3 periods a year but those still had me bleeding all the way through. The only way they'd stop is if I took 3 birth control pills at one time, which was too dangerous so I coudln't do that more than once. So essentially, they tell me there is no cause and no cure. I dont' know what to do, or if maybe there are some home remedies that could work better. I heard taking aleve, and a few other things. I'm just so lost.

Anon,
I am so sorry that you are dealing with this.
During all your blood tests, I assume the doctors tested your hormone levels? Did they find that you were particularly high or low in anything (estrogen, progestin, etc?)
Do you have a gynecologist of your own? Is she or he the one who supervised the extensive testing 2 years ago?
Have you had a Pap smear since? Have you had your hormone levels tested since?

I am 16, And I have had my period for more than 2 weeks now. There are a blood clots and I have been on birth control pills since september 2008. I've had this problem when my doctor put me on TriNessa. I was sexually active during 2009. I've tried telling my mom about this problem and she simply says that it's just my weight affecting it. I'm getting really worried that it might be someting going terribly wrong.
