Q:

I am a 70 yr. old female, no health issues, no medications and had a nose bleed from 1am until 4:30 am. I used hot packs, cold packs and eventually stuck a cotton ball in my left nostril when it finally stopped. Lots of heavy clots.

Hi Anon,

Thank you for reaching out to EmpowHER with your question! I used to get nose bleeds all the time and understand how uncomfortable and annoying they can be. Especially if they last for that many hours!

The nose is filled with many blood vessels and nose bleeds can occur very spontaneously without warning or notice. Some common causes of nose bleeds include dryness, picking your nose continuously, hypertension/high blood pressure and blood thinning medications.

Since your nose bleed lasted for so long, I would definitely visit the doctor and get it checked out. A 3-hour nose bleed is a long time, and a lot of blood may have been lost. I advise visiting your doctor so they can make sure you are ok and can give a proper diagnosis on the cause of the nose bleed.

Are nose bleeds common for you? Have you experienced a lot of nose bleeds in your life or are they uncommon?

I hope this helped and please keep me updated!

Best,

Erin
