I am a 25 yr old indian female and I have developed dark black lips in the recent 2 years, esp the upper lip.earlier they were pink.I dont smoke and i drink tea with milk twice a day.My diet is proper and i do drink lots of water as well. I would like to know what causes the lips to darken, are there any creams or medicines or natural therapies available to get back my original lip color, and do i restore my lip color in the future.Could you also suggest the type of lip balm or lipticks that need to be used for sensitive lips.would appreciate your reply.

Well you either have dark lips because you
September 25, 2014 - 4:09am1) wear wavy too much lipstick or lipgloss
2) stay out in the suna lot and your lips got darker so i would first off say wear sunscreen if you dont u will look older as you age secondly i would say stop wearing lip gloss everyday that makes your lips darker and peel anyways i dont think their is anything you can do to make them look better besides time you must wait till they get their natural color back

Hormones that are balanced (meaning: just the normal hormones that your body produces) can affect skin coloring. Why do you think you have a hormonal imbalance?
According to MedlinePlus:
What causes skin darkening, or "hyperpigmentation", is that your skin cells are producing too much melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production, and can affect certain parts of your body.
Skin can become darker from sun exposure, certain medical conditions, or pregnancy (again-due to hormones).
What type of dermatologist did you see, and are they Board Certified (of have other credentials)? It is important to know the REASON behind your hyperpigmentation; did you receive this information?

thank you mam for the kind reply.I do not have any allergies towards skin creams/lipsticks.I usually test the product before application .I fell ill once in my late teens and since then I have them but sun exposure made it worse. My lower lip is getting better as i am taking care. However the upper lip is gone way too dark.Hence needed some suggestions.I happen to meet a beauty specialist and she told me that regular application of paste of boiled beet root and a lip message with olive oil works great for dark lips .I will try it out and let know.Has anyone tried any cream that has shown good results for dark lips?.let know plz

Anon, is it possible that you are getting too much sun exposure? Lips have pigmentation in them that can turn darker if they are exposed to too much sun, just like the rest of our skin.
Sometimes allergies can cause this, also. Do you know if you suffer from any allergies to skin creams? Did you used to wear lipstick before you noticed your lips turning dark?
Some women with lips that got darker use a combination of lemon juice (to lighten) and glycerin (to moisturize) them over time. If you only use a tiny bit of lemon juice you can leave this mixture on overnight and wash it off in the morning.
During the daytime, Vaseline will keep your lips moist, and will not darken them.
Here's one page with tips about this:

In terms of lip balms or lipsticks, what you want to do is stay with brands that are well-known and well-made and have the word "hypoallergenic" on the box or label. If you live near a department store, go to the cosmetics counters and ask the salespeople at the counter if all of their lipsticks are hypoallergenic. I usually would not recommend specific brand names, but I know through a friend that Clinique is very good for sensitive skin.
