How can I prevent sunburn on my scalp?

During the summer I always make sure to put on sunscreen when I'm outside for a long time. I apply sunscreen all over my body, but sometimes my scalp burns. I've never put sunscreen on my scalp because I think it would make my hair greasy. How can I avoid sunburn on my scalp?

Hello Erin,

I agree with Missie and have had prevented burns by wearing bandannas and hats as well. Sometimes I do find myself being bored with my limited selection of hats but I recently discovered sun scarves (http://www.yoursummerskin.com/accessories/shop-categories/sun-protective-scarves.html) and I really enjoy them. If I get too hot after working in the garden and want to cool down, I can just sit in the shade and adjust my sun scarf. They are also super cute and easy to incorporate into my everyday outfits.

Hope that helps!

Hi Erin,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Empowher. Sunburn on the scalp can certainly be an annoyance at best. I live in sunny State of Colorado - a mile high in the air with over 300 days of sunshine.....what do we do? We wear bandannas and hats to reduce the sun exposure. Sunscreen on the scalp is the worst and after sweating can also go into your eyes therefore, I would suggest a color coordinated assortment of hats. I hope this helps.
