I am 49. I haven't had a period in 7 months. I am having the hot flashes, the mood swings and I have gained 30 pounds in the past year. Help.

Hi, Anon,

Menopause can be a bit of a bear, but it is also possible to deal with all the symptoms and relieve a lot of them.

Technically, you are still in peri-menopause. The definition of menopause is when you've gone a year without having a period. But the symptoms you're having are really common.

It's important that you have a good ob/gyn or naturopathic physician for help in dealing with menopause. There are so many possibilities in terms of treatment that you need someone who keeps up with all the options and helps you find your way through them. Do you have such a doctor?

Do you generally tend to favor conventional or alternative medicine?

Here's a Mayo Clinic page on menopause to help you get started:

Hi,
This is one of our more popular ongoing discussions, with numerous women and medical experts weighing in on possible solutions and treatment options.

I do not want to inundate you with possible solutions (unless you would like this!). Can you tell us what treatments you have tried already? What have you talked with your doctor about, regarding your symtpoms? Are you interested in both prescription, OTC and alternative/complimentary medicine options?
