Q:

Can IUDs cause heart palpatations or arrythmia?

I had an IUD inserted a few years ago after having my second child. Shortly after, I began having irregular heartbeat and was eventually diagnosed with SVT. After two heart surgeries and nearly two years of medications, I still had the palpatations. However, after having my IUD removed, I noticed the palpatations stopped. I know this may sound crazy, but can IUDs cause heart problems? Have other women had this experience?

I am 27 and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago after 3 years of irregular heart beats, light headedness and palpitations. The symptoms started a few months after I had the Merina coil put in. I have had ablation surgery to treat the arteries in my heart (which is the most effective treatment) but it hasn't had any effect. I found some information suggesting that anything that irritates the lining of the womb can cause an imbalance of progesteron and in turn lead to arrhythmia in the heart. Here's a link to the podcast that talks about this. The section about the coil is quite quick but it's in there. I am having the coil removed next week so hopefully it will have some effect.

Just had a baby 3 months ago..got the IUD put in 2 months ago, since then been Dx with high blood pressure and put on 2 different BP meds. I had been experiencing shortness of breath and irregular heart beat like feeling, went to the ER cause I felt like I was going to have a heart attack and they found nothing wrong with the blood tests, chest x ray or ekg, only found I had high blood pressure and suggested that I just had a panic attack. I followed up with my primary the next day and thats when he put me on the meds for hypertension. I have been taking them for a few days but they dont seem to be helping, its a low dose but I still feel the same. I feel like there is this dark cloud over me...like I can't enjoy life like I used ton I cry everyday, a couple times a day...this is where all my focus goes to..I have a beautiful 3 month old baby that's reaching milestones everyday and I hate that I can't enjoy it the way a mother should because I feel lost amd confused as to why my health has suddenly gone to crap. I'm 26yonnnand I've always been healthy. I really hope my problems are coming from this damn IUD. I have an appointment to get it removed tomorrow morning. Wish me luck please. Thank you to all the ladies who shared their experiences, I feel comfort that Im not alone and there is hope :)

thats the same thing it done to me. High blood pressure, anxiety attacks, heart palpatations, & foggy brain. I'm sure once you get it removed, you will start feeling much better. I am like night and day with having it out. Thank God!

Get that damn iud out!!! Google mirena health problems and just see how many women's health and lives were ruined by it. I was sick for 4 years. Took me two years to get back to normal. Chest pains and heart palpitations still haven't quite gone away. Go look into mirena support groups in Facebook. You will see just what a dangerous, deceptive, device that damn thing is. I went to the hospital twice with cheat pains while having my IUD. My breasts would hurt and swell so bad and my whole chest area would burn so bad along with internal chest pains. And those were just a few of my symptoms. I curse the day I ever got it.

The doctor sent me on my way.I went to the store and almost blacked out.Blood pressure went sky high , rapid heart beat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing ,and chest pains. For a brief moment I thought I was going to die.My friend got me home. I feel somewhat better but still dizzy when I stand up and feel like I have knives inside me.Glad to find these comments. I'm going to call my obgyn tomorrow.

I was a very healthy 27 year old (I say this as past tense because of what the mirena has done to me) who had the mirena inserted Feb 2013 and then 4 months later, I rushed to the emergency room with what felt like I was about to die. My left arm went numb and my heart started beating out of my chest. They hooked me up to a heart monitor and kept me under close watch for an hour. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and was sent home. I told the doctor that I just had this mirena inserted and asked if this could be causing my anxiety because i've never had that before and I was told "No, that wouldn't cause that". A year went by and I was still having anxiety off and on. I started to have severe mood swings. My moods got so bad at times that I would literly feel my blood pressure raise, I'd feel so hot inside and then i'd start with palpatations. This continued for a year after my first emergency room visit. Then one day I went to lunch with my boss and some customers and I started to feel severe anxiety again. By the time we left the restaurant, I started to feel kinda like I was not in my own skin walking out of the restaurant. We sat in the truck to head back to work and when I went to speak, I couldn't say anything. When I finally could speak, I sounded like I was handicap. It lasted for about 5 minutes. When I finally came to, I called my female doctor and asked her if she thinks that it could be the mirena causing my problem, she also said it wouldn't cause that to happen. I went to the hospital and was hospitalized and diagnosed with a TIA stroke. I asked my primary care physician if it could possibly be this new thing I had inserted and he said "No, it wouldn't cause that to happen" But he couldn't understand how someone with perfect vitals and blood work was having a stroke at such an early age. Sent me home on an aspirin a day regiment which I only took for about 2 weeks and then stopped because I didn't want to be on that everyday. If my vitals were fine and my blood work was fine, maybe it was just a flop, right? That was my thinking. Well, over the next year the anxiety got worse, the mood swimgs got worse, and the palpatations got worse. A year later, BAM another TIA which affected my vision. Couldn't see anything for about 10 minutes this time. Didn't even go to the hospital because I knew it was another TIA and figured just like the last time they wouldn't do anything. Well 2 weeks went by and I was in the kitchen at work eating breakfast and again, something came over me and I couldn't see, then my speech got really slurred, I tried to walk to my desk and was falling into the walls. Someone assisted me to my chair and the parametic came over. He asked me to repeat a simple sentence after him and by this point, I couldn't say hardly anything right. He asked me to smile and when I did, one side of my face drooped so he told my friend to take me to the emergency room ASAP. I was surrounded by a team of about 10 people taking vials of blood then I was rushed to cat scan. I was so limp and out of it. I was diagnosed with a major stroke which lasted about an hour. They ran more test and found I have a grade 5 hole in my heart which they believed was causing my stokes. I was sent home on a very strong blood thinner along with an aspirin a day regimen. I was asked to follow up with the cardiologist that week. I went to see my cardiologist who scheduled me to have surgery 2 weeks later. Had the surgery and everything went good, but when I went for my 6 month checkup, the hole was still open. I was still have severe anxiety, mood swings, palpatations, and felt like I didn't have much energy, also felt out of breath with the smallest of activities. The doctor wasn't concerned with the hole being open still because it was a BIG hole and will take longer for the tissue to grow over the device to close. Well about 6 months goes by and I have what they believe was absence seizures which don't usually develop. Ran numerous test including MRI, EKG, EEG, Bubble echo, and I had to wear a monitor for a month. So here we are. I just mailed back my monitor and have again asked if the IUD could be causing my problems. I was told by Neuro that its a possibility because everything affects everyone differently. My cardiologist has also agreed that it could be causing my problem, but asked that I wait to get all my results back to make sure that its nothing else. I waited for about a week and had to leave work due to severe palpations, anxiety, dizzy spells, and feeling like I was gonna pass out or vomit. Went to the heart doctor and I have been diagnosed with AFIB and put on more medication to control my irregular rhythm. Still having anxiety and palpations every other day. Finally I made an appt to have mirena taken out. The first night I woke up in the middle of the night with severe bloating. I took a teaspoon full of baking soda mixed with water and drank that. I felt some relief but wasn't completely gone. That lasted for about 3 days and I started my cycle which lasted for about 5 days. I was scared because I started passing clots the lenght of my pinky finger and as round as 2 fingers together. But I feel much better already. I don't feel foggy brained, have not had anymore palpatations, don't feel like my blood pressure shoots up immedetly after eating anything, I feel so calm. I will continue to see how I feel, but that mirena has caused me so many problems that may have never evolved had I not ever had that inserted. It has been a very long 2 1/2 years for me and i'm glad that I finally took control of my own body and had that mirena taken out. Even the day of delivery, my doctor looked at me strangely when I once again told her I thought the mirena was what was causing my problem

Hi all,

I had my mirena removed 5 days ago, after a number of things starting going horribly wrong. I had it for a total of 3 years, since I was 18. I have no children. I chose this form of contraception after tiring different pill options which didn't suit.

Weekly painful cramping, feeling absolutely tired zero energy, and no libido. More recently - this year I started experiencing serious chest pain. It was so bad one day that I went to the doctor and had an ECG scan - they found nothing. It feels like my heart is literally going to explode.

What's worse is the doctors don't want to hear it! I get this pain at least once a day now - bending over, reaching up high, laughing, breathing too deeply these things will start it up, and it is horrible. Nowhere can I find chest pain (or similar) listed on any mirena related websites. I am considering writing to Bayer, the manufacturers of this careless drug. Whether or not they will care is an entirelying different story, but people deserve to be more informed!!!

**UPDATE it has been 1 month since removal and I have had NO further chest pain whatsoever. I am now personally convinced that the Mirena IUD device was causing these heart attack like issues for me. All I can say is thank god I had it removed. If you are reading this as you are relating yourself to the same situation GET IT OUT!!! Other related side effects such as daily nausea, tiredness and anxiety are also decreasing heavily now. I'm getting my life back and couldn't be happier :).

Shame on you Bayer.
