Q:

Can IUDs cause heart palpatations or arrythmia?

I had an IUD inserted a few years ago after having my second child. Shortly after, I began having irregular heartbeat and was eventually diagnosed with SVT. After two heart surgeries and nearly two years of medications, I still had the palpatations. However, after having my IUD removed, I noticed the palpatations stopped. I know this may sound crazy, but can IUDs cause heart problems? Have other women had this experience?

If you are having issues and want your doctor to take you seriously then take these two medical article abstracts to your doctor:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19931365
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21424216
It's not proof but it seems to be a pretty valid link. You could ask for the blood tests to test your oxidative stress in particular ceruloplasmin to test the link.
I've been having palpitations, have been on IUD for nearly 2 years. don't know if it's AF or what and need to see the doctor. I don't really want to go off the IUD because it's been so good to me so I'm coming armed with this info.

I have been having heart palpitations since Monday. I went to the doctors Thursday for a major migraine, and I was having a heart palpitation at the drs office, and she could heart my heart beat racing, so I was hooked up to a EKG. The test came back, and she thinks my heart might be bigger than normal. I have an ultra sound appointment schedule for next wed. I was laying on the couch today, and my mother in law asked if I was pregnant because I looked bloated. I said no and told her I was on the iud. I was telling my husband, and he asked if I was, and maybe the iud was causing my problems. So I started looking on the web, and came across your stories. Now I'm freaking out. I am a young mother of two, and I'm so scared of something happening to me. I don't know if I should try to get the iud out right away. If I should wait till after the ultra sound. I'd love to hear your opinions!

Maybe hedge your bets?
You may want to send links to the information resources around here. (or print them out and take them with you if sending them ahead of time is not an option)

Tough to know if any particular doctor will take personal medical research seriously (doctors can be very arrogant about their profession), but perhaps you can schedule the removal (tentatively) shortly after Wednesday so you can have rapid follow up if you turn up more info that troubles you or if your doctor agrees given the info available.

Best of luck.
Tell us how things go and what you end up doing.

The IUD is hypothesized to have a mild inflammatory response which helps ward off cervical cancer, presumably due to HPV infection:

Low level immune response is triggered by gum disease and has been implicated in heart disease.

Different mucosa lining, same problem?

hello I had an IUD placed most 6 years ago. My periods have been horrible for about last year getting worse. recently I was in hosp for 5 days with iron deficient anemia, dehydration, and sinus tachycardia. I know that IUD is causing all these problems and am getting it out in two days. If u have IUD please check your iron level this is not same as hemoglobin. Mine was 7 and it should be 200. I needed several bags of iv iron. Also get echo of heart. mine shows buckling in a valve which was never there before.

I figured to chime in...I've have the Mirena IUD next month will be 3 years and in the last 2 years I've been experiencing this abnormal heart beats with a slight short of breath problem. I went to my Primary Physican had blood work done and base on the symptoms she mention Heart Palpatation. I was like this can not be normal I've been perfectly healthy prior to the IUD. In addition my hair started to come out rapidly, skin is not in as great tone, my hands are having this slight pain. As speaking this over with my friend she's been experiencing the same thing. I know all of this is related to the IUD...I just got off the phone with my Nurse and explained these concerns. I will be making sure this is reported and tracked...I've been on 3 year study for the Mirena IUD and I have to report everything that is unusal and defiantly all of the concerns I just read today I will be sending to the Clinic. If there's anyone out there who think to get the IUD please think over it before you do it. There's a lot of con's than pro's....

I had my mirena placed in may of 2010. Started having some issues with it in december with cramping and real bad pain in mylower abdomen. Now I'm being lightheaded, dizzy spells, my legs fall asleep if I sit down for less then an hour and my feet get swollen, then when I lay down after that I feel like its too much for my heart to handle I start feeling funny I'm not sure what to think because my doctor keeps insisting its not the iud. What does everyone think of that?
