Q:

Can canker sores be avoided?

I have braces so am prone to canker sores but am wondering what I can do to avoid them as much as possible. They can be quite painful and take a few days to heal, and having braces obviously slows down the healing process.

Any tips?

Ugh---I remember the agony!

I had braces for 5 years, and remember the relentless canker sores. My dentist did give me the wax that miscortes said above, and that helped...except the wax falls off in your mouth and sometimes was startling (and definitely gross). however, it was a nice relief from the braces in the far back of my mouth that seemed to jab the most.

Here is another site with some helpful tips. there is some medication that you can use (the same used for tooth aches,, I assume it has a numbing or pain-relieving ingredient) that you can ask your dentist about:

The Mayo Clinic website provides some information on how to prevent canker sores and also what to do if you have braces that cause canker sores on a normal basis. It appears that your dentist can provide you with orthodontic waxes that may help prevent the scrapes and scratches. Here is the link....I hope this helps http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canker-sore/DS00354/DSECTION=prevention.
