Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

Hi, Anon, and thanks so much for your question.

I have to tell you that yes, there is a chance that you and your girlfriend could have gotten pregnant just with the pre-ejaculate. There are sperm present there, and if a woman is ovulating, it is possible to become pregnant without the man fully ejaculating.

However, stress does indeed have a lot to do with our hormones, and stress in itself can cause a woman to go a few days late. Sometimes women who are very worried about pregnancy because they are "never late" write to EmpowHer when they are a week or even 10 days late, and then later they do get their periods. Hormones are tricky things and when we're guessing, they're impossible. With the amount of stress you say your girlfriend is under, it absolutely could make her period late.

I'm glad your girlfriend will take a pregnancy test so the two of you can find out for sure. If she is five days late, the test should be accurate.

Will you come back and let us know?

You aren't really late for a period, so give it another week. Are your periods usually regular, and if so, how long are your cycles (counting from "day 1" of the first day of your period to the day-before your next period; most women's cycles are between 21-35 days long).

The withdrawal method is about 75-80% reliable in preventing pregnancy, compared with 98-99% when using condoms and hormonal contraception (the pill, for instance). If you would have a "heart attack" from being pregnant, it would be wise to use a more effective form of birth control in the future...have you or your boyfriend talked about this?

My periods last 3-4 days and my cycle is rather irregular. I have also heard that after your first time your body starts to throw your period off. And i have been very stressed and paranoid lately, i think that may be a problem too. And yes me and my boyfriend have discussed this and he said hypothetically if i was, he would be there 100%.

Hey!
So I had sex for the first time (being two times) this month with my boyfriend, both being protected and only lasting about a minute or so and we used the pull out method. He didnt ejaculate inside me or at all. I had my period the week of October 12th-17th and havent had it yet and im totally freaking out. I have no signs of pregnancy whatsoever and i have been extremely stressed this month, and about this situation. Everyone tells me its in my head and im starting to believe thats true. Im too scared to take a HPT because if it comes out positive i might have a heart attack.

Hi, I'm in the same situation, my last period was october 9th-14th and I had sex on the 15th and 16th. We did not use protection (stupid mistake) but the guy did not ejaculate inside me and I was sure that I would be ok since my period was over. However my period is now 5 days late, and the only symptom I've had that made me think I was going to be on it was the mild break outs on my face. None of my other symptoms such as premenstrual cramps have occurred, discharge looks fine. And for the past week I've been thinking I'm pregnant, and it has been freaking me out. I can't be pregnant right now. And there have been some things going on with school, fraternity pledging and my social life that has made stressed me out for the past few weeks but I'm the kind of person who hides their stress which makes it worse I guess. I'm taking a pregnancy test tomorrow...if it comes out negative should I still be paranoid that I'm pregnant or no?

Hi, Anon, and thanks so much for your question.

Five days late isn't that late; it's pretty common for women to occasionally just go as much as a week or 10 days late due to hormonal changes in the body. And yes, with what you are talking about -- school, fraternity pledging and your social life -- that is enough stress to affect your hormones.

Are you usually very regular, or are you sometimes irregular?

It would have been possible to get pregnant in this way: Sperm can live in the body for around 72 hours. You had sex on the 7th and 8th days of your cycle, which means you might have had sperm in your system through the 11th day of your cycle. If you ovulated during that time, the sperm could have fertilized the egg and you could have become pregnant.

The 11th day is a little early to ovulate; how long are your cycles, normally? Are they about 28 days apart? More? Less?

Did you take a pregnancy test over the weekend? What were the results?

Thanks for replying, it is very common to miss your period after using Plan B. I hear this quite often from women that have used this in the past. Also, like I said before, every woman is different and you may be experiencing side effects from using Plan B. Stress or fearing pregnancy will also cause missed periods.

At this point, you should go see your physician, just to double check any side effects from using Plan B. In fact, you may have to be forced to start your period which comes in a pill form and that will help put you back on track. Of course, the physician will probably ask you for a blood test to verify pregnancy also but after three months, you would have had symptoms of pregnancy: such as cramping, sore breasts, etc. So, if you don't have any symptoms, pregnancy should not be an issue.

Please keep us updated. I hope this has settled your nerves!

Thank you for replying.
I have been very stressed out lately, but I didnt think it would make it this late.
I took the plan B about three months ago, so maybe that is the reason. Im not sure what else it could be.
