Q:

17 and haven't had period in a while

I had my first period when I was 16. I had maybe three periods over the next year (very light) ran track and cross country, and I knew that it was normal for athletes to have very light periods or none at all, so I didn't think too much of it. I stopped running soon after that due to injury. It's been almost two years and I had heavy irregular periods at first (maybe three), but it's been about a year since my last one. Is something wrong?

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

It seems as though there is something out of balance happening. You should go get things checked out with your gynecologist. If you had never experienced a menstrual cycle at 17 years old that is a condition called Amenorrhea, but since you have, and they were irregular at first there is cause for concern. Having a menustration is essential to a woman's reproductive health.

I hope this helps.

Be well,
