Dr. Beauchamp introduces himself and describes bone tumors.
Dr. Beauchamp:
Hi, I am Chris Beauchamp. I am Chair of the Department of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. I specialize in orthopedic oncology, which is the management of bone and soft tissue tumors, as well as adult reconstructive surgery, which is arthritis surgery, hip and knee replacements.
Bone tumor is a abnormal growth that occurs on or inside a bone. Our skeletal system has many bones. There are many different types of growths and abnormalities that occur in the course of our normal development, and then there are spontaneous growths, which are called neoplasms that occur throughout our lives; some of them benign, of no consequence. Some of them malignant, of obviously serious consequence.
