Registered Dietitian Donna Simon shares the number of daily meals you will eat after bariatric surgery. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.
Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
We allow three small meals a day and in between, depending on the timeframe between each meal if its greater than four hours, we tell them to have a small protein snack or a protein supplement.
And it could be something as simple as peanut butter and apples or it could be low-fat string cheese. So normally we want them just to go back to their proper way of eating of three small meals a day.
The number of meals we permit or allow our patients are three small meals with supported snacks of protein as needed.
Not everyone needs a snack. There’s some that are fine with just eating their three meals.
But the big thing is we encourage the water in between meals and if you feel you are not getting enough protein and our protein it’s anywhere between 60 and 80 grams per day, then we encourage a protein supplement.
