Dr. David Podkameni explains the stigma surrounding childhood obesity and adolescent bariatric surgery. Dr. Podkameni is the medical director at the Banner Gateway Bariatric Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Dr. Podkameni:
Social acceptance of obesity did not change over the past few years. It’s still a stigma and a social problem in not just in our country, but in the world. In terms of adolescent approach to surgery, yes it did change a bit, not that much yet, but especially knowing and showing that there is an extreme failure in terms of medical management of obesity and showing that those adolescence will be adults who are obese, it did change the approach over the past few years.

More bariatric procedures have been done for adolescence now a days than ten years ago especially because we have an increase in obesity, a tremendous increase in obesity in our adolescent population. If you compare 1976 to 1982 – that period of time to 2003 to 2006, there is triple the amount of obese kids.
