Staying Sober: How Does Social Networking Help?

Gail shares how social networking helps her stay sober.

Gail:
Early in my sobriety I didn’t, you know I was researching some of it online but I didn’t really know, but I bumped into a lady I met and this is what I call a quinky dink.

She originally lived in Florida and she moved all the way to Arizona and we hit it off instantly. She told me about this website called intherooms.com and it’s a recovery website.

I went on there and I filled out my profile and it’s amazing what it did for my recovery. I can talk to other alcoholics. I can reach out to somebody that’s a newcomer.

I can post what I am going through that day and people will comment on what they had been going through – inspirational, non-inspirational, struggles.

All the great things that come with being sober and clean today that website has given me.

You can go on that website and you can listen to speaker tapes and listen to other people’s stories. I do that a lot.

If there’s nothing on TV I’ll turn the laptop on and I’ll put on a speaker tape and listen to somebody else’s story of recovery.

Also, in the rooms, you can reach out and talk to other alcoholics. You can find a meeting.

I am getting ready to take a trip to Boston and I am really looking forward to going back there and meeting other alcoholics and you can go on that website and you can punch up where you are going to stay and it will also give you what the 12-step programs are and that’s what that website has done.

It’s great for people who are early, a newcomer. And what helped me is I saw friends that I have known in the town that I live in that are on there.

And it is not a private thing. It’s not about being private. It’s just about people from all over the world going to one website that you can get recovery from, whether it be you are in a bad space or a good place or you want to share something.

I went on there and I put my website girlsgonesober.net. I put that on there and intherooms was real supportive of that.

And that’s what recovery is. It’s one alcoholic or one drug addict talking to another, and what better way to do that over the internet.

I can speak to people who are in different countries. I can speak to people in town that I grew up in on that website.

intherooms.com is a great place for anybody that’s in recovery or trying to live life on life’s terms.

I highly recommend that you check out the website and reach out to somebody who might need help or just might need to hear what they need to hear for today.
