Sheree explains why she enjoys attending HIV support groups and shares the importance of having friends who will listen and understand her situation.
Sheree:
My HIV support group has helped me in many ways. Having a support system, someone you could talk to, someone who understands where I am coming from, because our families don’t always understand. They sympathize, but they don’t understand and being able to come to the group every week, like today is our support group today, that I have friends waiting for me who are ready to listen for anything, no matter who I am, and that makes me feel really good to know that I have friends and family here in my group waiting to help me, and I can help them as well.
It is very healthy for us to discuss what we go through because then we know others are going through it. We’re not alone. We don’t feel alone when we know there’s other people going through what we are going through. It’s very stress-relieving to see other women and talk with them and know that I am not alone at all.
If I had been talking to a woman with HIV and who had not been in support, I would encourage her to at least attend one and see how she feels about it and talk with someone in the group and see what her next steps could be.
