When you’re looking for the hospital where you are going to have your surgery there are two really important things to consider. One is how many of that exact type of surgery does that hospital do over the course of a given year because the more surgeries a hospital does, the more experienced their teams are in the operating room in getting to a good outcome.
The second thing that you want to do in finding a hospital is to go online. There’s an excellent website called healthgrades.com where you can look up the statistics of hospitals across the United States relative to their complication rate, their infection rate, and their death rates for a whole series of different types of common surgeries and while it’s a little bit complicated to use, it’s worth taking the time to try to understand the data because it really will show you the difference between hospitals that do a lot of surgeries and have a low complication rate versus some that don’t have as good an outcome.
